And you remember who Brandy has said her idol is don't you? lol

Anyway, this is one reason why I listen to so much late-70s/early 80s music.Back then, the tempo was FAST on many songs.Take O'Bryan's "I'm Freaky" for example.Kids today wouldn't even know how to groove to a jam like that....they're used to all this midtempo shit hop garbage.

That's why I like to compare the tempo of their music to classical music (because it really is just as slow and dull as classical music). They haven't got sense enough to be insulted though. Back in the day, if you accused someone of being into classical music, those were fighting words. lol

I agree that r&b and hip hop do need to divorce for a bit. I thank Mariah's stupid collaborations (though she's not the first to do it) and Bad Boy records songs that included Total's shitty background vocals.

New Jack Swing hurt R&B. The mid tempo songs came after that, during the Babyface era. Face pushed the mid-tempo songs in.

That would mean that "Rock Steady" from the Whispers was one of the first culprits to kill r&b.

I'd suggest u get a hold of:
Ledisi
Frank McComb
Mint Condition
Conya Doss
Monica Blaine
Eric Roberson.....a few real R&B artist around 2day.

All of them are good, but all sing mid-tempo songs. no funk.

Was new jack swing forced to be slowed down to "create" a newer sound and that's how it slowly started becoming midtempo?

I highly doubt it. If you listen to NJS, it is mostly James Brown-style beats done on drum machines. I don't think Teddy, Kyle West or any of the others intentionally did that. I just think they did it because they liked the style.

New jack swing did attempt to "keep the funk" in some degree though I think the smoother styles of Keith Sweat and Al B. Sure led to what eventually became "contemporary R&B" in the mid-'90s circa "hip-hop soul".

yeah I listen to some NJS here and there and am aware it's similar to stuff before. En Vogue sampled lots of James Brown

Everyone did in the 90s. James made a LOT of money in the 90s and didn't have that many of his own solo hits. It was mostly from samples.

That's kind of sad, but also cool in a way that he continued to make money that way. Even Rick James said in an interview before dying that he made so much money off You Can't Touch This for sampling Superfreak

Whitney's first album was good R&B. Its Whitney's SECOND release that became a problem.

nod And some people fail to realize that. After Clive saw what kind of crossover success Whitney became with her solo debut, he decided to go full throttle for her second album.
