Q-Tip: The Renaissance

I like it. The album's definitely like the love-child of Amplified and Kamal the Abstract. Not sure his rhymes are up to his classic peak, but the music sure sounds nice.

The first single is boring. If the album is akin, count me out.

Q-Tip should've explored territory Common trekked in Electric Circus, if you ask me.

Honestly, I thought it was a little boring on first listen, but it hangs together nicely as an album. Nothing groundbreaking but solid nonetheless.

"Shaka" is the jam people will be digging for years, really intriguing chord progression in it.

Electric Circus, though daring, has not held up well.

I hope The Renaissance is not Electric Circus.

Trust me, it's not. That's the nice thing about albums that already sound kind of vintage--you don't really have to worry about them holding up!

I'm really diggin' the new album, though for me, it's not as exciting as the tracks on Kamaal...or Open, for that matter...IMO, he's toned down a lot of the driving "live band" Rock/Jazz aesthetic, and opted for for a little more of a chopped and screwed hip hop vibe...and I guess that's kool...it's just that Kamaal was a brave step forward, and this feels like he's playing it kinda safe...that's just my two cents, though...maybe that's what he had to do to finally get something released....

I really like what he did with Shaka...it was originally a track called Where Do You Go...but I just wish he had kept Kurt Rosenwinkel's guitar part, that got cut completely. I also loved the original version of Johnny Died, rather than this new, slowed, altered version, Johnny Is Dead...But I like the whole album overall...It does have a more cohesive feel, and actually, that's an improvement over Open and the early versions of Renaissance that were floating around.....I think Tribe fans will probably dig it.

Oh, and btw, I agree, I'm really diggin' the Norah Jones track....This new version of I Believe(with D'angelo) is better than earlier versions, too....

I've since heard that Open apparently got shelved for the same reason as Kamal: not commercial enough--

So, I'm gonna just appreciate Renaissance for what it is--I do like it; it just that I really love that stuff in the can....

Definitely going to have to check this out. I love Kamaal, never heard some of these tracks.
