Dr. Dre Rock "N" Roll hall of fame Yay or Nay? Why not,Grandmasterflash recent induction & Run Dmc whom I think is a a shoo-in I can't think of anyone in hip-hop more deserving. What do you think???

I don't know if those 1984 World Class Wreckin Cru singles make him eligible in 2009?
To be honest, it would get weird if the hall of fame got really rap-centric. I like that Grandmaster Flash and Furious Five were inducted because "The Message" shifted MUSIC as a whole. And Run DMC is still really the blueprint for rap as it is today. They're like the Beatles to rap. But after that, ionno. [Edited 10/28/08 16:23pm]

No, if he was eligible as a non-performer, 1987 + 25 = 2012
As a performer, 1992 + 25 = 2017 Then again, he wasn't as memorable as a performer, lol. And I doubt he'll get inducted anyway but that's just me.

[Edited 10/28/08 16:23pm] I can see L.L. and maybe the Fat Boys getting inducted (and maybe the Get Fresh Crew on the basis of a couple great singles), but I can't think of another group that deserves it up to, perhaps, BDP or Public Enemy toward the latter half of the '80s. I DOUBT the Fat Boys would get inducted.
Run-DMC may be the next best thing because they had a rock & roll sense about themselves. I could see the Beastie Boys getting in for the same reason. Also Afrika Bambattaa. As for some of the other hip-hop acts? Mmm, I doubt it.

MICHAEL JACKSON: Always and Forever ----- Live Your Life How U Wanna Live It

I see the Fat Boys being inducted -- or at least nominated -- because while they may be forgettable where artistic merit is concerned, they were seminal in the mainstreaming of hip hop. They brought the world's attention to beat boxing, (which I've now seen everyone from John Tesh to some chick on America's Next Top Model do... well enough not to GREATLY embarrass me, I might add), they had great generational crossover appeal (songs with the Beach Boys and Chubby Checker, for goodness sake! ), movies and prominent soundtrack appearances, a Saturday morning cartoon, kids in suburbia wearing fat shoe laces and glasses with no lenses, etc. [Edited 10/29/08 6:52am] Ὅσον ζῇς φαίνου

I doubt it. His connection to gangsta rap would keep him out. I doubt the Hall would put any of the G-rappers in there. nWo: bboy87 - Timmy84 - LittleBlueCorvette - MuthaFunka - phunkdaddy - Christopher

It´s called the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, not the HipHop hall of fame. Dre is cool but he should not be inducted. He´s been in the game since 1984 as a performer but I don´t think he belongs there. They should draw the line after Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five and RunDMC for the reasons that Cinnie posted above. And before anybody thinks I´m discriminating...no, I´m not, I come from a Hip Hop background originally, I bought all those old school Dr.Dre/World Class Wreckin Cru and old Stereo Cru ( IceCube) vinyl records back in the days when they came out and believe me, I never would have wanted to see my Rap heroes inducted in the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame one day. That´s not what Hip Hop is or was about .
Prince, RunDMC etc. I can understand but Dre ? No. " I´d rather be a stank ass hoe because I´m not stupid. Oh my goodness! I got more drugs! I´m always funny dude...I´m hilarious! Are we gonna smoke?"

Otis Redding isn't. Temptations ain't. Aretha ain't. Marvin, Ray, and Smokey aren't. In fact, damn near all of the Black artists/groups that got in aren't Rock n Rollers, so you can't use the title "Rock n Roll" as a literal measuring stick as to who gets in or doesn't. nWo: bboy87 - Timmy84 - LittleBlueCorvette - MuthaFunka - phunkdaddy - Christopher

Well when rock 'n' roll first started, it was another name for R&B so that term has had so many blanket meanings over the years.

I think Run DMC would be the only ones from back in the day to get in. LL might get in, and should, but i can see him getting overlooked. Dr. Dre might get in the R&RHOF as a member of N.W.A. But as a solo artist or even a producer?!? I doubt it.

In a way, all those groups´ styles kind of originated from Rockn´Roll and Rhythmn´Blues. Hip Hop has a different tradition, a different history and a different approach ( two turntables and a microphone, no live instruments, at least back in the days, lots of drumcomputers). Funk, Soul, RnB....they all kind of use the same ingredients as Rockn´Roll, don´t they ? Rockn´Roll as a genre is another thing I guess but, in a broader sense, most Rock and Pop music and Funk, Soul etc. can be considered part of Rockn´Roll, even Punkmusic. In the end, it all goes back to a guitar, drums and bass.Hip Hop is different. But you have a point, some people in the RocknRoll Hall Of Fame don´t really fit in there...but I wouldn´t necessarily think of those groups you mentioned as odd Hall of Fame members. Rock & roll originated from R&B, or was a blanket term for R&B. Everything else is considered "rock & roll" by those terms. Hip-hop is different than that.
