Beyonce would like to be known as "Sasha Fierce"

Just like the "Seinfeld" episode where George wanted everyone to call him "T-Bone," Beyonce Knowles would like to be known by a bold new name.

The R&B singer has christened herself "Sasha Fierce" for her new double album, "I Am ... Sasha Fierce," due in U.S. stores on November 18, and has released a lengthy justification for the comical moniker.

"I have someone else that takes over when it's time for me to work and when I'm on stage, this alter ego that I've created that kind of protects me and who I really am," the former Destiny's Child frontwoman said in a statement.

"Sasha Fierce is the fun, more sensual, more aggressive, more outspoken side and more glamorous side that comes out when I'm working and when I'm on the stage."

Additionally, she has set up a cryptic MySpace page (http://www.myspace.com/sashafierce) that gives a "lucky person" the opportunity to receive a personal message and a gift bag valued at $500.

As George found out, nicknames usually do not work when they are self-bestowed. His colleagues thought he should be called Koko the monkey. In real life, rapper Eminem had better luck with his alter ego "Slim Shady," which he said came to him while he was on the toilet.

Beyonce released her previous solo album, "B'Day," to coincide with her 25th birthday in September 2006. It debuted at No. 1 on the U.S. pop chart and yielded the No. 1 single "Irreplaceable."

"I Am ... Sasha Fierce" will be distributed by Columbia Records.

It's not really "New". She has been calling herself "Sasha" for years. It is her stage alter-ego. It is her wild and crazy side of her.

This is a bad idea, though. The whole "Sasha is my alter-ego" thing was cute and quirky and humanized Beyoncé in the eyes of the public before. Trying to capitalize on it is only going to make her look crazy. This idea fails more than it succeeds. We've seen it work when kept in perspective - Garth Brooks/Chris Gaines, David Bowie/Ziggy Stardust. When pushed to the limit, you get T.I. vs. T.I.P. and Diddy/Puffy/Puff Daddy, etc. "Ciroc Obama" (yes this nigga did refer to himself as that! Ain't that a bitch?! I can't stand that fool.)
When unchecked, you get unpronounceable symbols and crap and people stop seeing it as cute and quirky and start seeing it as looney. Who knows? She may be on the verge of a Mariah or a Lauryn Hill? Next thing you know, she'll be declaring herself "Queen of Derion" and demanding that everyone refer to her as your majesty.

Man, when she did "Work it Out" I was feeling it I was hoping she'd keep doing music like that. That was a fun song. This "Sasha Fierce"'shit makes me laugh though.

This is getting rediculous. Why can't people just be content with being an entertainer? You didn't see Frank Sinatra or Sammy Davis, Jr. running around changing their names. All they needed was a studio, a drink, a cigar, and plenty of women.

Change your name, fine, but at least pick something that isn't so ridiculous--or pick something TOTALLY ridiculous like .

Sasha Fierce is like a cheesy weatherman name like Dallas Raines.

At least Beyonce is a pretty original name.

It WAS to get more media attention. He was trying to draw attention to what was going on with him and WB. He already knew that the name change thing wouldn't work beforehand. It was a silly gesture at best. The story he made up afterwards was to save face and fans believe him. He sounded like a kook with that "I have another person living inside of me and I don't know if its male or female" bullshit. Only fans would tolerate such ludicrousness. Dude was full of sh*t and his name change was no less of a gimmick than any other artist. Creative? yes. But it was also a gimmick.
