Here's the lyric. Puts most of her peers to shame.

Hat Full of Stars

I was folding up your letters
Unpacking winter clothes
Searching for my hat
I thought I left it by the door
So I tore around the room
Like a bird without a head
I saw your picture waving back at me
From underneath the bed
From a long, long time ago

When all I had
Was a hat full of stars
The one I'll always treasure
The one that you wore
You loved the look
But you never looked inside
You would have seen us there
You could've seen far
You should've seen the magic
In my hat full of stars

I'm trying to live in the present
But I keep tripping on the past
Finding out reality, well clarity
Comes in dribs and drabs
No we never had the time
For everything we had
So it felt like we had nothing
That's what makes this hat so sad
It was a long, long time ago

When all we had
Was a hat full of stars
The one I'll always treasure
The one that you wore
You loved the look, but you didn't look inside
You would have seen us there
You could've seen far
You should've seen the magic
In my hat full of stars

Now whenever I'm alone
And I think I might forget
I wear my lucky hat
Just like a crown up on my head

'Cause all I have
Is a hat full of stars
The one I'll always treasure
The one that you wore
You loved the look, but you didn't look inside
If you could see me now
You would've seen far
You should've seen the magic
In my hat full of stars
In my hat full of stars
In my hat full of stars

Firstly, I didn't call TDCAU lame. I called his outtakes lame. Read my post again. Secondly, no one with any knowledge of the history of music would rank TDCAU as the best political song ever. How many people have covered it? No one, because it's actually a self serving rant that is just pretending to be political. It has no resonance beyond MJ's personal situation. If you want to hear songs that genuinely encapsulate real socio-political subjects, then listen to "The Times They Are A Changin'" or "What's Goin' On"; songs which are constantly being covered because they capture such timeless truths.

You also illustrate your poor ear for melody when you say that melodically TDCAU shits over everything Cyndi ever created. TDCAU has a lot going for it but a great melody is not one of them. Put that melody against "Time After Time" and it's no competition.

As for this song, "Hat Full of Stars", the reason you are failing to hear how good it is, is because it is so stripped down. If a drum beat and a bass line was added you would have a completely different opinion. Take that melody to a piano, compare it to anything and you'll hear how special it is. But at the moment you're just hearing a quiet, rhythm free track, and so the magic is lost on you. But that is your failing, not Cyndi's.

...For me TDCAU is the strongest political song i have heard , and contrary to what you have said, the potnetial of the song is the meldoy not the lyrics,MJ has always been a fan of melody, Mj has been known as a great composer not only as songwriter...

MJ might well be a fan of melody, but that is not reflected in any of the up tempo songs on History (including TDCAU). Like James Brown's work, those songs are more about grooves and attitude (in this case the attitude is anger) than melody.

and about the song .....drum beat, baseline?,,what you are talking about? I will judge the song as it is, not if this added or that added ,the song is BORING and that doesn't mean that I have something against cyndi.....Thats my opinion.....deal with it.

You've missed the point. The point is that because "Hat Full of Stars" is so stripped down, it might not instantly appeal to people who are accustomed to more highly produced work (that includes you). It has no drums, bass or guitar. If you look at the charts at any given time, you'll see there are hardly any songs there that don't have drums. There's a reason for that. It's because drums make it easier for casual listeners to get into a song. In the case of this song, you have mistakenly said that it has a boring melody. It actually has a GORGEOUS melody, but part of the reason you don't know it is because your ears are missing the cheap thrills of a more commercial sound.

WTF.....with all my respect , your analzying is really silly and over the top, and most of the time sounds ridculous and stupid, so if any song has a drum, guitar , bass then its commerical? IN what logic your talking.....

There are many songs that don't have bass, drums , guitar that I like..and don't speak for me , speak for yourself, you don't know what I like and what I don't so....so your anazling that I don't like "full of star" beacuse it lacks drums. bass, guitar is silly and stupid, ....for example I like Darren hayes cover version of "I wish you heaven".....or The jacksons "be not always" and all of those don't have Drums...etc.....

Me postting in this thread will make a thread of a has-been star of the 80's successful.....so bye bye.

No, I didn't say that. What I said is that drums, bass, and guitar are clearly components of a commercial sound. That doesn't mean everything that has those instruments is commercial. I don't know where you got that notion from. "Hat Full of Stars" not only lacks a beat or any real sonic ornamentation, but even the main instrument (piano) has periods of silence in the song. All that makes it less commercial. What does "commercial" mean? Commercial means something designed to have instant mass appeal. The key word there is not actually mass, it's instant. But sometimes the best songs don't have instant appeal. You might have to hear them a few times before you realise how good they are. Commercial music tries to make that process as easy and quick for the listener as possible. They know the masses have short attention spans and so the music will have ear candy to make it more palatable. If Cyndi had recorded this song in the '80s I'm sure she would have taken that approach herself, but at this point in her career she was more confident and didn't need to pander to the lowest common denominator. In my case, I loved this song the moment I heard it. It took me totally by surprise. I wasn't expecting something that strong.

"Be Not Always" is an MJ song, and as an MJ fanatic, you are always going to be more responsive to anything he does. Darren Hayes was singing a song ("I Wish U Heaven") that you were already familiar with from Prince, so you didn't have to make any effort to get into the song. It was already familiar to you.

I'm saying lol. I don't know why so many threads in this section of the org almost always turn into a debate about MJ. Seriously, there could be a thread about pigeons on this site and somehow, someway, someone will find a way to interject the name Michael Jackson into it. Ridiculous!

Anyway I don't know about this being the most underrated song ever lol, it's certainly a nice song, but nothing that special really. Sounds like tons of other songs i've heard before. Cyndi has much better songs. From that album, I much prefer "Who Let In The Rain".

"And When The Groove Is Dead And Gone, You Know That Love Survives, So We Can Rock Forever" RIP MJ heart

"Baby, that was much too fast"...Goodnight dear sweet Prince. I'll love you always heart

I never Brought MJ into the discussion, obviously Midnightmover knew that am a huge MJ fan, she/he didn't like my comments about cyndi's song so the best way he'she can do is to bring MJ to the discussion and bash him, Midnightmover is a very weak debater...she/he likes to put people or other artists down, thats nothing new.

Not at all. I explained myself quite clearly on my last few posts. You had no response. And your extreme love for MJ is relevant because it says much about your tastes.

I'd like to hear those songs, but I don't think they exist. The chord changes, the lyrics, melody, Cyndi's voice. All very emotional and accomplished, but I think it's too slow and sparse for people with short attention spans. The org is a very low-brow place unfortunately. shrug
