'90s Hip-Hop Jam of the Week: The Pharcyde - "Runnin'" 1995 was a huge year for me because I was graduating high school and starting college far away from everything and everyone I'd known. This is one of those songs that instantly takes me back to those great times of innocence, discovery, newfound freedom, and new relationships. Looking back, I can honestly say this is my very favorite West Coast hip-hop song not done by Digital Underground (a childhood favorite). That chorus is so simple, yet so haunting... it pops into my head the instant the thought of running away does. The samples (Stan Getz and Run-DMC) are clever and well-interpolated -- this is a real masterpiece in the production catalog of Jay Dee (a.k.a. J Dilla). Here's the video:
As a bonus, here's the outstanding Philippians Remix from the Delicious Vinyl All-Stars album RMXXOLOGY: Give it up for "Runnin'"! "Whitney was purely and simply one of a kind." ~ Clive Davis

You like it even more than "Passin' Me By"? Wow. I went to school with a couple of these cats and had NO IDEA they were tryin' to get into rap. nWo: bboy87 - Timmy84 - LittleBlueCorvette - MuthaFunka - phunkdaddy - Christopher

Yeah, I think it's a better song than "Passin' Me By," which I also love. There's just something magical about "Runnin'" -- IMO, it stands out in a relatively dark period for hip-hop. It's cool you went to school with them. The Pharcyde was very underrated. "Whitney was purely and simply one of a kind." ~ Clive Davis

I loved both, "Runnin" and "Passin" Me By". They both hit me in different ways. Passin me by, just grabs me by my throat, every time I hear it. Why, cause it was something different at the time when Hip Hop was going through a regrowth. I feel the same way about, "93' to Infinity", by the Souls of Mischief. "Runnin", is just the kind of song that you put on when crusin. The vibe is just so laid back. "Love is like peeing in your pants, everyone sees it but only you feel its warmth"

Absolute CLASSIC!
I think this was the first time I took notice to a JayDee production.

I also really like the white label remix by Rae & Christian, which I believe found it's way by release of this remix compilation:
I don't have that CD though.. I just have the remix on vinyl.
