Yeah i dug his retro style on that album better than the motownesque mood that he's in now. IMO i just think the al green/curtis mayfield mode is more his speed than the motown mode. exactly. I loved that mood he was in that album as well. It put off a modern vibe with a 60's twist to it ("wild child", "thinking of you", "annie may") unlike this current album which is sounding soley like 60's music. I have listened to the album 4 times so far and my reaction now is that I'm a bit disappointed. Though this does sound more different than anything he's done before, I wish he could have incorporated a bit of himself today in 2008 instead of sounding entirely like 1968. I will forever love and miss you...my sweet Prince.

@ OPH,,,,that shit is my joy! co-sign it's Ray Ray that is the snoozefest I meant it gets better towards the end but Instant Vintage is great I mean there's stuff I could do without... but it's still a great piece of work "OPH"... yes... I've worn that interlude into the ground 57 feet deep Thirded. Instant Vintage is one of the best R&B records of the last 10 years. This one sounds nice, if a little too retro.

I always liked the Still Ray song and it helps that my name is Ray but the video for that song was cheap is hell. It looked like saadiq shot the video behind an old abandoned malt liquor store around crenshaw blvd. Ahhh here it goes loves it loved the whole tuba player cameo & things because those who mind don't matter and those who matter don't mind."

I went out and picked this one up today! When I popped the disc in my player, I really was shocked. For the past 20 years I've listened to Ray or Tony Toni Tone, I have never known Ray could put it down quite like this. When the first joint played, I just knew that this was going to be a different album. I was a little disappointed because it didn't really have that sound that he's been known for and it started to sound a little redundant in some spots, but overall it's a great retro record. I respect everything he's done on this one from its 60's-styled production to the vintage-sounding songwriting. I mean, one can really mistake this for an album that was recorded in 1967 or 1968. I can't stop playing "Oh Girl," which sounds like a Delfonics record. That's my jam.
I guess I'll have to listen to it again because it is a very different yet unique gem. Hell, I think it rivals Amy Whinehouse's Back To Black and Sharon Jones' 100 Days, 100 Nights in some respect. Check me out and add me on:

It's one of those records that demands your attention and you can have fun with it at the same time. I just have to become more accustomed to the new direction he's gone into with this album. It's an incredible record, tho. Love every minute of it. Check me out and add me on:

Well as a concept album.....it's great. it should be looked at as such.... a concept album. He really got his James Jamerson vibe on with this release!!!!
I'm sure his future offerings will won't have the sound he's had on his latet projects. Keep in mind he still has the CJ Young and D'Angelo material that has yet to come out.

i didn't even read what everyone else said, but i have to say this...
had instant vintage, didn't love it love it, but loved it dig? ...never got ray ray... but this one???? please go get it. i bleed for music like this. this (stylistic-era/type of groove) was all i listened to until i was 14. and as far as "new" artists recreating an "old" sound... tho he's obviously of "our time" this sounds like it was recorded "back then". i mean even the tonality of the mix. i havent felt anything this authentic in a while. and i'm including amy. sorry to whoever takes pain in that last statement. nobody else's "throwback" record has the "warmth" this one does.. jess did you hear it yet?!? (this really makes me feel like i'm 10 again ) [Edited 9/19/08 13:57pm]

I like it. On the first listen, my only complaint is that the weaker songs (IMO) are all towards the front. That makes for a strong ending, but at the expense of a lackluster start. I would've sequenced it differently. Of course, my opinions will probably change after a few more listens. "Whitney was purely and simply one of a kind." ~ Clive Davis
