9/11 and Music

I was just wondering if anyone has any memories about 9/11 that are connected to music.

I remember that MTV played videos non-stop for like 2 weeks after 9/11 and they frequently played this: http://www.youtube.com/wa...IU2_y5D__I

For some reason, I think about 9/11 a little when I hear it.....weird.

Anyone else have a similar story???

that day was the 1st time I heard the live version of Lynyrd Skynyrd's "Tuesday's Gone"....never thought southern rock could bring a tear 2 the eye,but when Gary Rossington hit that last high note at the end and then the harmonica chimes in....

First, let me start by saying that I was present during the 9/11 attacks on the WTC. The salon I worked at was on Church street (2 blocks away from the WTC). The first plane hit on top of me as I was buying coffee off of one of the trucks parked outside.

The one song (and especially the video) that brings me back to the event is "No More Drama" by Mary J. Blige. Although the song was recorded before that horrific day, that song and video incorporated the events and the feeling many felt and still feel not only about 9/11, but life in general. She performed this song live at the Grammys following the terror attack, and that was one of the most emotional performances I've seen her do. She managed to putthe feelings of the nation into this performance.

I was a freshman in college, and I remember walking through the quad, which was eerily silent, except for some asshole that thought it was funny to blast "It's the End of the World As We Know it (and I Feel Fine)" over and over again.

But, post 9-11, I usually think about "All That You Can't Leave Behind" by U2, which seemed to be near ubitiquious at that point in time.

My biggest connection with 911 is the Glitter soundtrack. Probably because it was released on that day. Also, I remember playing "Never Too Far" after watching all of the events unfold on television.

"WHERE WERE YOU....."

Where were you when they built the Ladder to Heaven?
Did it make you feel like crying?
Or did you think it was kinda gay?
Well I for one believe in the Ladder to Heaven
Ooh yeah yeah yeah, 9-11
I said 9-11 9-11 9-11 9, 9-11

Where were you
When they ran out of stuff to build the Ladder to Heaven?

Where were you
When they saved that Ladder to Heaven?

From "A Ladder To Heaven" South park

And the Glitter soundtrack. I was listening to it when the 1st plane hit unfortunatley in college.
Straight Jacket Funk Affair
Album plays and love for vinyl records.

I remember buying the Blueprint album by Jay Z. on 9/11. So that album always reminds me of that terrible day. Classic album BTW.

I don't have any musical memories connected with 9/11 because I hated current music back then also.

It was same thing then as it is now.....shit hop. lol

SoulAlive has said that Jamiroquai's "A Funk Odyssey" was released on 9/11. That would have been a memory for me except I never heard it until he recommended it to me years later on the org. As the defenders of today's shitty music would say...."there was good music but I had to search for it". Well, dammitt, that's only one, where's the rest of the good music? And don't recommend no slow ass shit either. lol

The last thing on my mind was music when 9/11 happened. In fact, I couldn't get myself to listen to anything until MTV came back and I remember that they would play certain videos that were positive or fit the situation that had to do with 9/11. Even then that wasn't enough cause I turned right back to the news. It wasn't until that Saturday after 9/11 when I finally put on one of my CD's. It was one of the bootleg Prince CD's I had just gotten a week or 2 earlier and the music on that helped me a lot. They happened to be the first boots of Prince's I ever had so I will always link them to 9/11 and them being a part of getting me out of the depression I was in at that time.

I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

I think she did it :p

I remember seeing this live on television it moved me very much!

As a dutch guy, it took the Irish band U2 to make me feel American for a minute. The moment where Bono shows the inside of his jacket towards the end sent shivers down my spine! A great tribute! clapping

If it helps, Mariah redid "Funkin' For Jamica" on the Glitter soundtrack. As well as "Last Night A DJ Saved My Life". smile

The Aaliyah album reminds me of 9/11 and that whole time period. She died like 2 weeks before and I was listening to her album alot. So even though the songs aren't lyrically attached to the events of 9/11, the feeling I get from listening to that album, is around that time period in 2001.

One of my favorite bands released a CD on September 18, 2001. On that CD was this song:

I loathe that song! I loathe the fact that it got overplayed so much and that it was taken as a 9/11-anthem eventhough it was just a coincidence. I loathe Live! nod

the Aaliyah album
really flashes me back
to that morning I got the phone call

because I found out
about her death the same exact way
I was asleep in my bed
and awaken by a phone call

same thing with the twin towers
"be who you are and say what you feel
because those who mind don't matter
and those who matter don't mind."

I always associate the song Superman by Five For Fighting with 9/11. The song was gaining popularity before that day but it took on a whole new life once the event happened.

I cant stand to fly
Im not that naive
Im just out to find
The better part of me

Im more than a bird...Im more than a plane
More than some pretty face beside a train
Its not easy to be me

Wish that I could cry
Fall upon my knees
Find a way to lie
About a home Ill never see

It may sound absurd...but dont be naive
Even heroes have the right to bleed
I may be disturbed...but wont you concede
Even heroes have the right to dream
Its not easy to be me

Up, up and away...away from me
Its all right...you can all sleep sound tonight
Im not crazy...or anything...

I cant stand to fly
Im not that naive
Men werent meant to ride
With clouds between their knees

Im only a man in a silly red sheet
Digging for kryptonite on this one way street
Only a man in a funny red sheet
Looking for special things inside of me
Inside of me
Inside me
Yeah, inside me
Inside of me

Im only a man
In a funny red sheet
Im only a man
Looking for a dream

Im only a man
In a funny red sheet
And its not easy, hmmm, hmmm, hmmm...

Its not easy to be me
Shake it til ya make it dancing jig

Bowie's Heroes is the song I'll always associate with 9/11, because I remember watching that benefit where he performed it live, and just feeling so moved. Not so much by the song itself or the performance, but when the cameras would pan down to show the audience reactions.

To see people clapping and singing along like they were, the hope present then was just so palpable. There were cops and firefighters dancing to the music; dancing in the face of death.

We can be heroes...just for one day. music
