I've heard it once and it needs more listens and the songs sound very complex. Lots of changes in tempo etc. It cannot be any worse than St Anger. On another note i find the cover very sexual. Is this purposely done?

All the talk I'd heard about the album before hand was about how fast it was. Frankly on the first couple of listens I thought St. Anger was way faster. It's gonna be a grower, it'll take time to absorb all the tempo changes. It's pretty good but I was hoping to be blown away.
On a side note the vocals sound about half the volume they have been on a Metallica album since Black. Probably deliberate attempt to emphasize the guitar work but still, I wanna hear the vocals.
I must be one of the few who didn't want to lynch them after after St. Anger. I listened to that album like it was a demo. Sure it needed some editing and the production wasn't very nice but there were moments in many of the songs that were the most aggressive and energetic Metallica has ever been.

Yeah i agree, im not understanding the HATE towards St. Anger. It was a record being made by a band that pretty much could have just broken up, there was alot of bad feelings coming to the surface with Lars and James and you can hear the ANGER, its a raw fucking record, i like how its not edited and polished to look neat.

I loved Shoot Me again, All Within My Hands, Unnamed Feeling and the ultra heavy part of Sweet Amber. What about you?
Oh yeah I loved the title track too...

^^Yeah, I listened to St. Anger again today, after listening to Death Magnetic a couple of times, yes... St. Anger is not that horrible everyone makes it out be.. but it's also not really good! I can't believe that they didn't do any solos and most songs just sound like parts thrown together.... and the drumsound confused it sounds a bit better on the DVD... but yeah... it's heavy and raw, at least something! wink The only song I really really like on that album is St. Anger itself... that song is a monster when they play it live! The rest is soso!

I listened to St. Anger today and I gotta say I don't know what they were thinking singles and concert choices wise in regards to this album.
St. Anger is awesome, Frantic is catchy but loses it's appeal quick, Dirty Window is one of the worst songs on there as is Some Kind of Monster. To me it's all about the second half of the album. Purify would be a wicked song if it wasn't for that stop\start riff they use in the verses, every other part of that song kicks arse. Apart from that stupid "Kill, Kill... KILL!" bit tacked on the end All Within My Hands is one of the best songs they've ever done... in my opinion.
The new album reminds me heaps of Justice... Complex but not catchy like Puppets was. Also it seemed like they abandoned all the more modern guitar tones they used on St. Anger. In that regard this album could of come out in the 80's and no one would of know any different.
Yeah I enjoy talking about Metallica... Someone add a reply, keep this thread going!

thumbs up! I would never have thought that I would say this about a new Metallica album again, but I´m really enjoying it so far. 'Broken, Beat & Scarred' is a really strong song!

Yeah, I'm liking Death Magnetic.

To an extent, it's a return to their Thrash roots.

St Anger wasn't as bad as some would suggest, but this is back to what they do best.

They'll never be the be-all-and-end-all of Thrash again - too many bands have eclipsed them in that respect. There are faster, heavier, more brutal, more technical - you name it - bands around now, BUT at the end of the day it all comes down to the quality of the songs and in this instance Metallica have issued their strongest collection of songs for a long time, whatever genre those songs do/ don't fit into.

Good to have them back to such strengths.
This is not an exit

I agree with some of the posts.....

Their technical ability is light yrs behind the metal bands today, but at least they don't do cookie monster vocals. Which is my big problem with new metal bands.. Have you heard the cover of Iron Maiden's Wasted Years but some sh*tty new metal band.... dog shit.

However, with that said.. Metallica went from having technically challenging and melodic complex songs and decided to become a rock band.....from a phd to G.e.d.

which is fine, but don't call it Metallica....

I think St. Anger was horrendous not for just the mix, but the songs were missing structure and melodies. Plus they tried to return to their 'battery" days with frantic, it just didn't work.

I had high hopes for this record with Trujillo, who is a monster bass player, but the released 3 songs on youtube, and the live performances are just not doing it for me. People get on Lars for standing still ability wise on drums, but no one talks about Hammet's solos are the same tapping crap.

The songs I have heard are not a return to form. And I am not even sure seeing them live again would be worth it, since Lars can not keep up with 208bpm.

I will buy the album for further listening.

I would request that they continue to record old NWBHM songs and release another Garage Days... Cause those records still rock.

Rick Rubin couldn't save this band, we need to face it... it's over.

And I say this with deep sadness, cause Puppets and Justice meant everything to me from 6th grade to 10th.
Music is the best...

A very strong record for them, the playing is very tight once again and even better than past playing.

I've downloaded the album illegally, just to piss off Lars....lol
Sofar I had one listen and my first impression is that it's musically impressive, everything's at the right place and even Hetfield's singing seems to be improved! This is their 'Opus Magnum', here they showcast what Metallica can, that they're still on top of their genre.
The major thing that is lacking though are songs with a head & tail, that are recognizable. Each song, although musically near perfect, turn out to be an exhausting sit-through...which is a bit disappointing to me.
