Janet Jackson started her Rock With U tour Wednesday night at GM Place for an audience of around 10,000. That might sound good, but in the days of The Velvet Rope album she would have sold out immediately.

That's the way it is today. There are fewer sure things and the act now must work harder to assert its individualism and hold its own in the face of a tougher environment.

Jackson is no stranger to hard work and she has become famous - at least in Vancouver - for her exacting standards.

This dedication to putting on a spectacular show might get her through a time of comparatively low album sales, possibly even reviving interest in the current Discipline. She had to survive opening night first.

Opening nights are supposed to have technical problems or theatrical miscues but this one appeared well-rehearsed and fast-paced.

What did she start with? I don't know. There was so much going on. There were nine dancers, pyrotechnics, spurts of fog, backing films, projectors on video screens and a walk-around stage that came out mid-floor.

There were hydraulic lights, flaps that popped out of the floor, a digital curtain, break-dancing and, of course, loads of hits.

There were also multiple costume changes, from futuristic catsuits to sailor suits to a red evening gown for a medley of ballads, one of the few times Jackson slowed down.

She has raised her own standards, downplaying the sexual angle for a more athletic show that didn't have a musician in sight.

The emphasis was on action and dance, and seemed more natural to her.

Any show following Janet Jackson into GM Place will find it difficult to match her.

In the fad-hungry world of pop music, seven years is a lifetime.

Many who make it to the tops of the charts one year will be nothing but a frothy memory seven years after their career climax.

But Janet Jackson - who launched her first tour in seven years Wednesday night with a high-voltage performance at GM Place - has a secure place in the pop world. The soft-spoken diva has a fan base and track record that allow her the rare privilege of hiding from the spotlight for years at a time before breaking out again.

But when she decides it's time for a tour, Ms. Jackson makes sure it's done right. And when she promises fans the show is going to be packed with hits, costumes and dancers, she doesn't disappoint.

Within the first 10 minutes of the show, Jackson powered through four hits, covering material that spanned an impressive 22 year range. The opening set made it abundantly clear that Jackson has weathered many different musical trends and eras, but has always remained an individual.

Blasting off with The Pleasure Principle, off her 1986 breakthrough album, Control, Jackson quickly set the tone for a show that had a serious celebratory party vibe. The 42-year-old danced and sang her way through What Have You Done for Me Lately and onto Feedback, the lead single off her most recent album, Discipline.

With an ear-piercing blast of pyrotechnics, a fog of thick cloud and dancers that popped up out of the stage and runway, Jackson proved within the first few minutes that she didn't choose the low-budget route for her Rock Witchu Tour.

The costume changes came fast and furious, ranging from futuristic space wear to a sailor-inspired number that included a curious corset to a long red sequined gown - which she wore for her slowed-down set of four ballads (including Come Back to Me, Let's Wait Awhile and Again). Nine dancers did their best to keep up with her on stage, a video screen behind showed graphics and images to enhance the mood, moveable staircases created layered interest, and a band worked away off to the side.

The crowd - which didn't quite fill the stadium - was on the quiet side to begin with, but exploded with high-pitched cheers for mega-hits like Nasty, Miss You Much and Together Again.

But it was after that last tune - Janet's eighth No. 1 hit on the Billboard charts - that the audience went wild.

For what seemed like minutes, Jackson stood alone, at the end of the runway, gesturing gratitude with her hands and allowing a few tears to roll down her cheeks. Judging from the screams, that kind of emotional display from Ms. Janet was worth more to the 11,000 or so fans than all the dance moves in her repertoire.

But while Jackson can be endearingly sweet and tender, she can play nasty just as well, if not better.

Toward the end of the more than two-hour show, Jackson put on an S&M display that would have either made you blush with embarrassment or flushed with lust, depending on your range of sexual fantasies.

For one enthusiastic male fan, it might have actually been a fantasy come true as he was hoisted up on stage, walked towards a torture-like device, and hoisted into various compromising positions as Ms. Janet and her dancers had their way with him. But it was probably a good thing there were barely any young kids in the crowd.

Rhythm Nation, one of Jackson's signature classics, was one of the last songs of the night and was presented with so many deafening fireworks explosions, I briefly felt we were under attack.

And, in a sense, we were. Janet Jackson's latest choreographed concert spectacle is an aggressive reminder to the world that she is a woman who has risen above fads and scandal (who can forget the famous Superbowl wardrobe malfunction?). It is a reminder that she is a trend-setter in her own right, a true diva, and a marvelous performer.

Just an absolutely incredible show, guys. I'm way too tired to write a full report right now (after getting about 4 hours sleep the past few nights), but will have a review for you shortly. She LISTENED. From the costumes to the choreography to the setlist to the stage (the catwalk is amazing and ensures everyone gets their money's worth) to NO WHIMSICAL MEDLEY.

LOL @ the pre-Control medley. "I did this when I was FIFTEEN." She said it was for the die-hards.

She looked like she was having so much fun. Everything seemed so spontaneous.

The highlight of the first show of Janet Jackson's North American tour Wednesday night was not the tightly-produced dance numbers, the many costume changes, not even the interminable (and hot) S&M scene, involving a lucky audience member.

The most memorable moment of the Vancouver show came almost halfway through, when Jackson, dressed in a gold and black glam hip hop-inspired track suit (and one gold glove), stopped on the catwalk after her hit Together Again, listened to the crowd roar its approval, and became emotional – really emotional. We're talking tears.

“Thank you,” she said – seeming to really mean it, as she waved her hands, begging the audience to stop.

It was one of the rare genuine moments in the highly-produced, two-hour-and-20-minute-long show, and it marked the point where Jackson seemed to loosen up, get comfortable, and enjoy herself.

And she had every reason to enjoy herself. At 42, she of the infamous Superbowl wardrobe malfunction proved Wednesday night that she has still got it – big time – at least as a performer. She can move like she did back in her Rhythm Nation 1814 days – almost 20 years ago now – and she never seemed to wane, even as the clock ticked past 10:30 pm, and the crowd (mostly younger – much – than Jackson) seemed to tire of standing on its feet.

The singing is another matter. Too much of the vocal performance was pre-recorded and played back as Jackson either sang along or added the odd “come on!” or “woo!” as she danced around. The numbers she actually sang right through – such as Let's Wait Awhile – were a bit bumpy at times and she seemed to be struggling a tad as she held her hand up to her ear in an effort to catch the right notes.

But the crowd was forgiving – and who wouldn't be when presented with a show like this?

It started off powerfully. After hitting the stage with a splashy entrance through rolling fog and two giant glittery J's, Jackson cycled through three of her biggest hits – Control, What Have You Done For Me Lately and Feedback, the dance club-friendly single from her current release, Discipline. Wow.

Then there was the spectacle of it all: nine costumes (ranging from a red ball gown to a sexy sailor get-up), nine spectacular dancers, and a stage show that included video projections, dramatic lighting, and pyrotechnics.

But the sparks really flew toward the end of the show when Jackson, dressed in her S&M best, walked the catwalk with her two female dancers, looking for a fan to have a little fun with. They brought him on stage, installed him in a harness and Jackson simulated having her way with him.

The crowd loved it, but all I could think of was Jackson's contention during a phone-in press conference last week that she hoped parents and kids would come to her show together, and make it a multi-generational outing. This was not an act you want your child to see – and not something you want to experience with a parent in tow either.

The simulated, er, lovemaking aside, an intimate show this wasn't. But it was satisfying: a fun, glitzy choreographed experience worthy of a woman who's been in show business longer than most of the people in the audience have been alive. Bravo.

How much time did she actually spend on the catwalk/B-stage? Did she perform any full songs out there? Did you see her well all the time? Even when she was on the catwalk? Was the band hidden all the time?

A lot of time. Her big emotional moment with Together Again was at the end of the catwalk. Every seat in the house is excellent because of this catwalk.

You can see her well at all times as there are two giant video screens (widescreen) on each side of the stage. If you are up front on the floor and she is on the catwalk you can also easily turn and see her.

No songs solely on the catwalk.

Band is up to the right of the stage. No room on the stage for them.
