Why doesn't Janet ever sing like she did on Scream? I don't know if that song bought something out in her, but usually her vocals sound rather weak and strained (somewhat pathetic live)... but she sounds so strong on this track.
Maybe she pushed the boat out because she knew who else was singing on that record and didn't want to be showed up... What do you think? Did she steal the show on Scream?

I love her voice on this song, it sounds so harsh and rough, it sounds great. I know MJs voice sounds like that a lot, I really think if she sung any other way the song would have sounded horrible. I mean, MJs grunts with a shy weak little voice would have sounded ridiculous. I agree with you, her voice is very weak, although shes an OK singer, I think she needs to project more when she sings.

A lot of people who have worked with Michael have said that he pushed them extremely hard, and that it helped them produce some of their best work as a result. Maybe he didn't go easy on her in the studio just because she's his sister?

Really great thread.
I have always thought this too. She did sound great even on What About she did sound all strong. Maybe because if she sang like that she would not sound cute. But then she sings about sex. [Edited 9/10/08 11:01am]

Isn't there an interview when someone ask Janet why they could not hear her on this track and she says she wondered the samething, alluding that her vocals were somehow mixed down... she said she knows when she left the studio she heard herself just fine, but whe the finish product was released it was a diffrent story

I wonder the same thing. Back in the day her voice seemed stronger than today. Most of the time is sounds very weak and "timid". i still love her but I just waish her voice were like it was b4...

Its not weak she just doesnt progess her voice and make use of it. Last time she did it was on Show Me I didn't really notice this until I started listening to her debut album. It seems like she sang with more confidence back then than now. Maybe she strained her voice on Scream. Been gone for a minute, now I'm back with the jump off

I think she sounds her most powerful here.

Oh wow, I was just about to start a thread with the EXACT same title!
I really wish she would sing like this again, the thing I hated about Discipline was the stupid girly whispery vocals. SCREAM it girl! I think it would have to do with keeping up with MJ's vocals...

I guess they are implying that MJ had something to do with that, no doubt. Always blaming him, but what else is new? I never believed that though. I don't know what Janet or that person is talking about because I can hear Janet fine on "Scream". Vocally, it's one of her best songs to date and many of her fans agree with that. Anyway, Janet may not be the best singer, but she has a sweet, soothing voice. I've always liked her voice. I really just wish she would stop whispering tho. christopherlala said: What do you think? Did she steal the show on Scream? Lets be honest here, Janet kicked Michael's ass on "Scream" . I'm a MUCH bigger fan of MJ's than I am of Janet's, but that's the truth. She was so fierce in it, especially in the video. Whenever I watch that video, i'm always like "Michael who"? lol. Because she hurt herself trying to actually sing....she needs to stick to the mumbling, whispering, can't understand what she's saying singing that she normally does.

MJ's voice was much stronger on Scream and I used to sometimes like janet's voice on it and get annoyed with it at other times. In recent years, janet has had stronger melodies in her music than michael, even if he has a better voice, but she really did her thing in that video, dance moves and all.
MJ performed it amazing at the HIStory tour, even if it was being lip synched, the routine was good. I can't wait to see Janet do it if it's true that she's performing it on the tour. I only saw tour pics, I don't want to read the setlist, I want to be surprised.
