Can you recommend me some songs similiar to Madonna's first album?? Hey,
I always read: She was nothing special, there were so many other singers who sounded like her. Can you recommend me some songs (on youtube) in the "Madonna" vein. You know, songs a la Physical Attraction, Lucky Star, Angel...

Check out the other stuff Reggie Lucas did(with James Mtume). Its better I think Madge's debut was Reggie's SAFEST sound.
They produced: Phyllis Hyman Stephanie Mills Marc Sadane Donny Hathaway & Roberta Flack Among other talents, I'm sure.

wow, thank you, I'm gonna listen to them tomorrow.
anyone else has some recommendations?? you know, like when I feel in a Thriller mood but don't want to listen to it again I take some Heatwave records... It's the same with this now. I like Madonna's first album and search for songs that sound pretty much like those songs. [Edited 8/12/08 15:07pm]

All night passion is a bloody materpiece pop track. that whole album is slamming. love it! by the way, isn't funny how she was singing about all night passion gets her through the day when she was 14?

Aretha Franklin-"Who's Zoomin' Who"
Tina Turner-"Typical Male" Both always struck me as very Madonna sounding tracks musically. You can't deny the dance pop sound of those two tracks. I love both those tracks but the best of the Madonna sounding tracks has to be Regina's "Baby Love". Madonna was a fool not to pick that one up!

I don't know about YouTube but Gwen Stefani did a song called "Serious" that sounds like it could have been a Madonna - Jellybean Benetiz joint.

I thought of Serious by Gwen as well

It rips off the beat from Burning Up. Anything by Jody Watley from her first solo album
No way in hell could Madonna get funky like Jody did on that album. Still a Thrill and a lot of other stuff on there could NEVER have been Madonna songs. However, Most of All sounds like a True Blue reject - no surprise as Pat Leonard wrote and produced it.

I know Jody's funkier, but they did have similar writers and some people have called her the black madonna, though I totally disagree with that. I heard Madonna stole voguing from her. And aw I love Most of All, it does remind me of something off True Blue or Who's That Girl, but it also reminds me of Pleasure Principle or something off the Diana album at the same time. The Regina album is called "Curiousity". Not sure if it is rare, but I will be looking for it next time I'm on a vinyl dig.

I was among the people that loved that one and thought it should have been a single over all the hip=hop stuff....not that it would have helped sales. I think they were going to make it a single and a part of the video was made without Gwen (just the H girls?).

I don't know why whatchu waiting for wasn't a bigger hit, I thought rich girl and luxurious were total garbage that kept me from buying the album. Danger Xone, now that's an underrated track!

I remember "Baby Love" by Regina! It's from 1986 and it sounds just like a Madonna track from that period!! Wasn't it produced by Patrick Leonard?

Steve Bray. There was recently some discussion about why they feel apart. It was well after this, of course.

Bumping this thread because I was always curious about this. Madonna's first album was always named as her most influential. Thanks a lot for the suggestions!

I did soem research as well.
Of all the Mtume songs "Would You Like (To Fool Around)" comes next to her. Also "Never Knew Love Like This Before" is the older sister of Borderline. (Intro?) Now I'm listening to Evelyn King. I like her voice, I believe she would have handled the Madonna-album songs better than Madonna.

One that just came to mind was Cher's "Skin Deep" from her 1987 self titled album (the faux metal one with "We All Sleep Alone" and "I Found Someone"). It was a single but charted low. Something tells me if this single was the biggest hit, Cher would have gone dance again sooner than 1998's "Believe" (although the hint that Cher and dance music were a good mix in the post disco era came when Jr. Vasquez mixed "One By One" and it was so big, it appeared on VH1 for a while).
