I would be more inclined to believe it was a race issue if other white artists/celebrities hadn't been on the cover, but that's obviously not the case as has been proven in this thread. I'm not sure what the problem is though. Robin Thicke is a talented dude and although he may not be very popular with mainstream audiences, the black community certainly seems to have embraced him. At least they seem to support him more than any other group so I don't get why a magazine like "Vibe" would not want to put him on their cover. Putting him on the cover just because he's white and the black community has embraced him wouldn't be fair either. He's not the ONLY talented person who hasn't had the cover. I haven't seen Anthony Hamilton on the cover. Van Hunt? I'm sure I could compile a list fairly easily. Dude doesn't deserve special treatment because he's white and talented. So what. You have to be INTERESTING, too. He is not.

Sorry BlaqueKnight, but I don't think he is that talented and it is not because he is a white guy. There's plenty of white talented artists that sound way better than Robin. When I heard him sing live it was horrible and I was shccked because the last cd was pretty good, but twice I heard him sing live and his voice is just not that strong. I don't think putting him on the front cover of VIBE would have attracted large sales either. Just my 2 cents. [Edited 9/3/08 18:39pm]

banks said: So Robin Thicke was interviewd by a media source recently and he gave his take on why VIBe came at him with some racistish bull about why he can’t be on the cover of the mag:
Q: What is it like trying to break the color line from the other side? Thicke: When I did a recent interview with Vibe magazine I asked, “Why can’t I get the cover? This is a magazine I love. If there’s one magazine that I’d want to be on the cover of, it’s Vibe.” Their response was they don’t have white artists on the cover; that the only white artist they’ve had on the cover was Eminem. I guess if that’s what it is, it is what it is. And I respect that because I live in a house with a black woman. I won’t use the word “racism.” I will say it’s a tough — but rewarding — fight. I look at Mary J. Blige, somebody who has had only a few pop hits and yet has changed culture, generated new sounds and inspired leagues of artists. She’s now a worldwide phenomenon. And it’s because of what she stood for; she never gave up. She kept making great music, pouring her heart out to people. You can’t always expect people to be as color-blind or open-minded as you want. What you can do is keep giving your heart and soul, like Bob Marley did. His music became so overwhelmingly loving; it was a relentless love in a sense. Keep beating them down with love and they can’t stop you. http://theybf.com/ Interesting... Hey, I like Robin, but he's breaking my heart with some of that "open-minded" bullshit he's talking about. He had the #1 song on Urban AC radio. He gets tons of airplay on so-called "black" radio stations. He also regularly works with popular black artists. All of this far exceeds the attention that "white" radio and media gives to black musicians that play rock-oriented music. Yes, he's talented. Fortunately, HIS talent gets recognized. In fact, a hell of a lot of white R&B acts have been recognized over the years. The reverse is not true. Black radio and media are far more accepting of this than is white radio, which works out very well for him. Robin, you ain't got no problems. One more thing: His wife is fine!

Like I said earlier, it wouldn't surprise me if the people currently working at Vibe (or at least the ones he talked to) have no idea who has been on the cover. "Whitney was purely and simply one of a kind." ~ Clive Davis

Personally, I no longer like Thicke or Robin Thicke because he changed his style to be more like Justin...The same way I hated Justin changing his style to be more like Michael Jackosn.
Anyway, I was a fan of Thicke back when he had dreads and came out with the song When I Get You Alone. I don't know why he felt the need to change his style to be like someone elses...perhaps pressure from the industry. At any rate, if Vibe didn't want him for the cover, they should've just been honest as to their reasons as opposed to coming off as racist assholes. [Edited 9/4/08 1:44am]

I think it is funny that Robin Thicke thinks his status is such that he deserves the cover of any magazine.
His music is decent, but he is devoid of personality. He's got no charisma.

Justin's music is just a sleeker version of what "Color Me Badd"? ...and that was already a group Robin was producing when JT was in his NKOTB phase...

Vibe responds to Robin
“We have a great deal of respect for Robin Thicke and his music, and we remain flattered by his desire to be on a VIBE cover. A VIBE cover is a huge milestone in any artist’s career—recent cover stars include Young Jeezy, Mariah Carey, 50 Cent, Usher, Senator Barack Obama, Eminem, Lil Wayne, and Robert De Niro, to say nothing of our 15-year history. We wish Thicke the best, and we’re glad he discusses his thoughts on race and R&B in the new October 2008 issue of VIBE.”-- Danyel Smith, Vice President & Editorial Director, Vibe Media Group / Editor-in-Chief, Vibe Magazine
