UB40: A solid, underrated band There came a point where I got so tired of hearing Red, Red Wine on the radio that I just pretty much wrote off UB40 but I recently slapped on their best-of compilation and was taken aback by how much I loved the crap out of it. Their poppier covers are nice, but some of their greatest stuff IMO didn't chart in the US or achieve the same sort of lasting popularity--One in Ten, Kingston Town, Sing Our Own Song and especially Don't Break My Heart...such a gorgeous song. I'm thinking I should dig back into their catalog--any recommendations? I already have Labor of Love and Rat in the Kitchen. [Edited 9/2/08 10:23am]

Yeah, I dunno. You'd think they were just some reggae karaoke band based on the US hits.

They were never the most talented band but they made an array of very good (and original I might add) politically charged singles in the early 80's. Tracks like King, Food For Thought and the One in Ten are really different to anything the US market ever had chance to pick up on. If you like that stuff pick up a compilation called the UB40 File.
