And on the real, I only count 2 true Hip Hop classics of theirs. But yeah, Hammmer should get in before NBN, that's REAL.

Vanilla Ice..... no.

But yeah Hammer I agree with and did list him amoung those I felt was worthy of honors.

Let's Get It Started was the jam. His early videos were killer. He showed that a rapper could sell millions of records and put on big-stage shows with any rock or r&b star. I hated Please Hammer Don't Hurt'em, because , but you can't discount what he did. Jay-Z, Kanye, Lil' Wayne and others might not have been able to do what they do without Hammer.

Popularity does not have to be a qualifier for establishing a hip hop legacy or an artist impact on the genre... but it has to be considered. Vanilla Ice was nothing more than a marketed 'white' version of Hammer. Hammer on the other hand built his nitch from scratch. For better or for wrst he had a major impact on hip hop/rap music.

You're right; popularity has to be a factor. But it's one of many to be weighed. Sometimes, the artistic quality or impact an artist or group makes is so profound they deserve recognition on that basis alone. Sometimes longevity is a factor, sometimes a short career is so brilliant you have to recognize it.
Sometimes you have to mix and match these factors.

Take NBN for example. I think there are better acts to honor, but here's the case I'd make if I supported them. They helped put Jersey on the map in hip-hop, they blended a rugged, underground style with pop sensibilities and hooks, expanding rap's takeover of the music industry, they made a classic pop song, "O.P.P.," a hip-hop anthem, "Hip Hop Hooray," other hip-hop jewels like "Uptown Anthem," and they put on a good show in their heyday. Their run was short, and they didn't break any new ground artistically, but they did succeed in hip-hop's "golden era."

But you guys are just going off the popularity of their 2 hits.
No.... I'm going off of what was being played everywhere. Thier 'hits' were for sure played on radio... but thier entire albums were bumping in the rides at the beach, parks, etc. Thier hits got them noticed... but Treach's mic skills got them famous. But as I said... hip hop was at the time growing into a very regional thing... and Chicago being a 'dance music' city... was more into hip hop acts which were very danceable and/or had a beat which sounded good in thier cars.

I'm not going to say we didn't play 'any' JBs or Gangstarr... but they just weren't that special. Our local house music DJs and 'hip-house' acts (like Fast Eddie) were more important to us than most acts which came out of 'East Coast' hip-hop. In fact.. the biggest song in these parts by the JBs was thier Chicago 'hip-house' inspired, 'I'll House You'.

I gaurantee you as you head to the west coast... they would list a dozen or so acts ahead of them with out hesitation. NWA, DJ Quick, Digital Underground, Hammer, Sir Mix-a-lot, Tone Loc, etc

Only the most die-hard of hip-hop purist who feels that the roots of hip-hop began and ended in NYC would dis-agree. But to a large portion of the country... those acts and a few more were more important to hip hop as they diversified the sound and gave identity to other areas of the country.

One last note on the JBs is that I believe nationally a lot of thier thunder was stolen by De La Soul and Tribe. Of the three groups... he JBs were the least known.

Agreed.

Yeah, as cheesy as Hammer was, he certainly deserves to be on, solely from his performances. My fave jam was "Turn it up". I loved the video, especially when he even went as far as to dis Run-DMC, marking the new change of MC to Dancer/MC.

They need to replace Naughty By Nature with Roxanne Shante. Wasn't she like the first female hardcore rapper at the tender age of 16. Rapped on a song to get enough cash for a pair of designer jeans. If that ain't street..... I don't know what is. lol Does anyone know if she's been honored by VH1 yet?

LMAO @ Mutha saying "Who's next, Rico Suave?" spit dayum.

While ya playing, Roxanne Shante rapped enough to get her record label to pay for her PhD from Cornell University! She had a clause in her contract that said her record label would pay for her education. Those dummies jumped at the chance figuring she wouldn't finish. Dr. Gooden went all the way! That wasn't street that was business!

She should be honored for being a hip-hop legend who actually used her career to get an education. Many of today's MC's have a hard time even speaking the language beyond the scope of 16 bars.

Yeah... but I am speaking of what got her started in the first place, she was only 16 (if not younger) then... the contract came after. Her first song she did was to pay for a new pair of jeans, she said it so herself, that if she didn't really want those jeans she may not of gone that route. The record contracts came later. She always knew how to hustle for hers.... not hating just stating facts. wink

Am I the only one that sees a problem with Too Short being honored at the Hip Honors. And can anyone honestly say that they have seen a Too Short video on VHI. I think if you are going to honor Too Short you might as well throw in Ice T, Vanilla, Young MC, and Third Base to that list. What else has Too Short contributed to Hip Hop beside BIIIAAAATCH?

Too $hort put the Bay Area on the Rap Map, and was one of the first "trunk peddlers," selling his music from his trunk. It's called: Pioneer.

Uh, and being played on VH1 is NOT a criterion eek lol .

Hmmm interesting argument, but I don't think selling CDs out of the trunk of you car is being a Pioneer. I think that is....well.....selling CDs out of the trunk of you car. If you think Too Short was the first to do that then I think your a little misinformed on your history of Hip Hop. As far as putting the Bay Area on the map doesn't make him a good artist? Vanilla Ice put the Valley on the map should we honor him as well? I guess maybe we should go ahead and honor Tag Team for putting Atlanta on the Map? Do you think Ice T was the Pioneer for Gangsta Rap as well?

Oh yeah and of course Too Short was never on VH1, that was called irony.

well the music industry is alot different now than it was back then.rap acts were still largely ignored by most companys..so selling cds out the trunk of your car then had a much more significance..because that was them getting thierselves noticed ...that was how they got to the public.

Hmm? Someone needs to to go to Hip Hop 101. I'm taking new sign-ups and we have financial aid thumbs up!.

First things first, in an era when Rap/Hip Hop wasn't getting too much attention, some artists had to go to the actual street level and sell their music. Too $hort was one of those artists, and he moved a shitload of music doing that and THAT'S how he gained noteriety AND put the Bay Area on the map. From there, a lot of other artistss across the country began to do the same thing. Do ya research before you start "spittin' game" about things you don't truly know about.

After $hort was able to make a name for the Yay, artists like Paris, Digital Underground, Hammer, and even Pac were able to get in the game a lot faster due to $hort's pimp moves in '87/'88. That makes him a PIONEER. Go look that word up, playa. Oh, and yeah, Ice WAS in fact an architect of G-Rap. Again, go do ya research before step up to the mic. cool

Oh, and work better at your "irony" jokes, that one fell kinda...well...flat. biggrin

Wow your really serious. You believe that Too Short paved the way for Tupac, Digital Underground, and even Hammer? Hmmm maybe your research is the one that's whack!
Being from the Yay I can definitely tell you that Too Short did not pave the way for those acts. He might have paved the way for Spice 1, Celly Cell, Rappin 4-Tay or even E-40. Tupac, Underground, and Hammer had a completely different flavor than anyone from the Bay at that time. Thats like saying 2 Live Crew paved the way for Kanye West! And my point about selling tapes out your trunk was that he wasn't the first one to do it, so that doesn't make him a Pioneer. Remember just like you said Hip Hop didn't have much mainstream exposure back then so EVERY artist was trying to find a way to sell their music. Tupac, Underground, and Hammer's originality was what got them in the game not Too Short's weak ass rhymes! At least Eazy E with his weak rhymes founded NWA. All Too Short founded was BIIIAAATCH. So maybe next time you'll make sure someone's listening before you step up to the MIC!

Styles notwithstanding, Too $hort helped put Oaktown on the map. IIRC, he was the first underground star from that area. Plus, his overall style and flow influenced a lot of those you listed who followed him, as well as those in the Dirty South, which is arguably the dominant region in hip-hop today.

And my point about selling tapes out your trunk was that he wasn't the first one to do it, so that doesn't make him a Pioneer.

But he was among the first from that area to do so, correct?

Well, kind of. There was Def Jam, Nervous Records, Cold Chillin', Ruthless and other labels out there. Too $hort built his following from scratch in an area that hadn't been on hip-hop's radar before.

Wow you really ran out shit to say! Not surprised to though figured it would happen eventually. Bullshit only goes so far.

Just the fact that you didn't even make a solid argument for any of what your saying proves my point. You have actually contributed as much to this thread as Too Short has contributed to Hip Hop.....ZILCH!

Remove Too Short from Hip Hop and what would have missed? Not a damn thing.

And just so you know to be a Pioneer means you have to be the first at something significant. Ask yourself if Too Short fits that bill. I think you'll be surprised at the answer you find.

And oh by the way no one is singing up for your Special Education Hip Hop Classes. You'll be riding the short bus by yourself.

lol Like I said, we have financial aid available for those who qualify! Whenever you no longer wanna feel left out in the Hip Hop conversations when speaking with TRUE Hip Hop Headz, just dial 1-800-WE-SKOO-U lol.

Now, the mere fact that you using "styles" as a way of saying $hort didn't open the door to the Yay, REALLY means you truly don't know Hip Hop. This isn't about STYLES, son. This is about PIONEERING. Look that up. Starts with a "P" evillol.

And how in the hell did you even try to relate 2 Live Crew to Kanye? That just might be the single most ridiculous shit I've read here this week! spit

Not a damn thing.

spit What is there left to say? I mean, honestly. You don't know Hip Hop. Simple as that, and it's both painfully and yet hilariously obvious. I can't teach you on the fly, especially if you think "Rap Styles" have anything to do with "Pioneering". You just don't like the dude - cool, and that's certainly your prerogative, but don't sit there and try and speak on a genre you know very little about sans for some Bay area rappers that you heard on the radio up there and you thought you'd be "up on it' if you kicked those names to us JUST because you don't like $hort lol.

I mean, ANYBODY can throw out names like E-40 and Celly Cell, but do you know anything ABOUT THEM besides their songs? Do you know of E-40's significance in the game? Nope. So again, I can't teach you what you refuse to learn, especially what you refuse to open your mind to. Not my issues, but they are yours shrug.

But again: We DO have financial aid available!...and we can easily accomodate you up front on that very same bus! thumbs up! evillol

While ya playing, Roxanne Shante rapped enough to get her record label to pay for her PhD from Cornell University! She had a clause in her contract that said her record label would pay for her education. Those dummies jumped at the chance figuring she wouldn't finish. Dr. Gooden went all the way! That wasn't street that was business!

lol

She should be honored for being a hip-hop legend who actually used her career to get an education. Many of today's MC's have a hard time even speaking the language beyond the scope of 16 bars.

You give 'em credit for too many bars.

Ohh my young ingnorant friend. I guess you can't teach a retarded dog new tricks so we will just leave it where its at. It is obvious you are in fact Too Short's Biaaatch so there is no use in trying. I would in fact think you were Too Short if it weren't for the fact that you actually sound educated. It is apparent that neither of us are going to lose any ground in our arguments so cheers to you.
As far as not knowing Yay Area rap, I am going to just leave you in the sweet bliss of your own little world. Having lived all over the Bay including San Francisco, Fairfield, San Jose, San Leandro, I think I am pretty well versed in Bay Area Hip Hop especially E-40, The Federation, Keak Da Sneak and the like, having lived most of my adolescence in the 707. So we will let sleeping dogs lie. However I do think there are some individuals in the Org who may need to take those classes.

lol Did $hort dog steal ya ho, playa?!?!?! Dayum! Why you so salty over this cat? He took ya lunch money? Did he bang moms - in front of you? And did you REALLY say that since you "lived all over the Bay area" that means you know Hip Hop? spit spit spit - That HAS to be the 3rd most ridiculous shit I've read this week, 2nd ONLY to your comment comparing 2 Live Crew and Kanye and then foolishly and uneducatedly saying that Mint Condition and Shai had THE SAME SOUND! lol

Look, son, I can cut you a deal: I can offer you a discount price for the 1st semester and I can teach you Hip Hop ONLY up until the mid 90s but for anything further, you're gonna have to pay full price. Oh, and there are online classes as well evillol.

("I lived all around the Bay area, so that means I HAVE to know Hip Hop. Right?") lol

But yeah, we will certainly agree to disagree and be done with it. Good "give and take" though, dawg. thumbs up!

Hardly. Tribe made much more noise than De La. It comes down to who has the better songs. Naughty may have had 2 hits (I count more) but that's 2 more than the JB's. Sorry but that's a fact... and I'm not the one that brought up hits. Hell, I'd put Gang Starr ahead of any group-- save for Run DMC, Tribe, NWA, Whodini, and maybe EPMD-- and you can say they never really had a big hit either.

Maybe I'm a little biased, being from Oakland, but Short belongs in there. He was crude and his rhymes elementary but there was a street intelligence to his raps... and let's face it, the beats were hittin'. If influence means anything, Short was a major influence (for better or worse) on a previours inductee, that being Snoop. You can hear him all throught the west, midwest, south, and even in the East whether they want to admit it or not. razz

I'm thinking that they are leaving out some obvious choices and saving them for later shows. If you put all of the heavy-hitters at once you don't leave anything for later and these award shows are about business after all. That's the only way Rakim goes in on the third show, right? smile

Again, it's about monumental/pioneering and De La was the first of that kind of Hip Hop, then came ATCQ, so it's not about "noise" between the 2 of them but about pioneering. Plus, De La's STILL going while Tribe is done. And the JBs were part of the pioneering of the Afrocentric tip in Hip Hop. To purists, that's much more important than having 2 big hits. And how many other hits can you count from NBN? eek

And Rakim shoulda went in as numero uno!

I remember more than 2 from NBN

O.P.P.
Uptown Anthem
Everything's Gonna Be Alright
Hip Hop Hooray
Feel Me Flow
Craziest
Mourn You Til I Join You

Again, as far as hits go - I only see those 2. The others made some minor noise but nothing to the status of OPP and HHH.

JOB-RELATED NBN DEBATE UPDATE EDIT! lol :

My buddy/co-worker and I just got into it over NBN's "hits" and he pointed out to me that they had 8 top 10 cuts on the "Rap Charts," so I will concede - solely by the rap charts as evidence - that they've had "major" hits other than OPP and HHH. That I didn't know, so yes, they should be honored - BUT - Not before some of the aforementioned artists thumbs up!.
