Lenny Kravitz Underappreciated

I had the pleasure of having the day off and got to see Lenny Kravitz's Unplugged set on VHI Soul. The brother is just sick. I think he is so underrated. He has a lot of haters out there, but I don't see why. Dude is Funky! fro

He is funky, but I think Lenny bites off of so many different people (including stealing one of P's songs as well as Ingrid Chavez's lyrics). I think he has a bad rep.

I saw the video to his new song, "Love, Love, Love" yesterday on BETJ and it was so funky. I haven't brought a Kravitz album in over five years because he disappointed me with the releases of Baptism and Lenny, but he is so talented overall. He's one of the most musically inventive brothas out there today to me. I might just buy his new album! How is it?

There's still a good amount of folks who appreciate him (I like him), but he will never for as long as he lives dodge the "biting" thing. He just can't get from under it...

I think he's a good musician, a good producer, a good performer, a good songwriter.

But ultimately his albums seem to hold no weight. They start out strong, but they're missing something. They are fairly unoriginal, and don't really seem to be saying much.

I've always championed Lenny on here. I've seen Lenny several times live. he puts on a good show. Lenny has his "sound" that's for sure. Lenny pretty much still sounds the same on his latest album as he did on his debut in 89. He has a format that he doesn't stray away from. His biggest problem is that he doesn't ever come close to matching the cats that he always "borrow" from. Hendrix, Sly, Curtis, etc. He's not the only cat does this of course but because Lenny has the "rock star" persona, people "expect Lenny to be Harder than he is. Because Lenny isn't a lead guitarist, that hurts him more than anything, doing the genre of music that he does.

Fair and accurate. I want to think Lenny's gonna break through musically and artistically, but thematically, he's kinda cruised.

I like him, and like much of his music, but I don't consider him underappreciated.

At all.

Whazzup Brutha B? I always thought Lenny was cool. But he really needs to work with some new producers/musicians (but keep Craig Ross).

I love Ms. Blackman but his new drummer is great. And as I've always said (and Soul Alive will agree with me), Lenny needs to drop that 14 year old funk CD he's been promising people. He's been playing it safe for the last few years with his "predictable Zep/funk power ballad" formula.

I dig Lenny a lot, but the last several albums he released were pretty vapid lyrically speaking, even if they were pretty good musically. I have that live DVD/documentary he put out after the Lenny album and it seemed like he really needed to just take a break and recharge and get inspired again. When he's inspired, he's awesome, but when he isn't, he sucks.

I can dig that. There has always been an expectation I feel when I throw in a Lenny CD but they do always seem to come up a little short.

yeah, and he sets up that expecation because his songs can be really good. I think he's always been a little too style-over-substance. Works well for singles, but gets thin over an album.

I still enjoy his first four albums. Even some occasional song after that. Mama Said is still the bomb. Love it to bits.

Lenny does his thing..
There have been times that i couldn't deal with him and the whole "Lenny persona"
But, Just off the top of my head I could compile a highly enjoyable (to me) Cd of Lenny tracks..

1-sittin on top of the world
2-freedom train
3-fear
4-Always on the run
5-What the f... are we saying
6-Come on and love me
7-Is there any love in your heart
8-Live
9-take time
10-california
11-Bring it on.

I always dug Lenny Kravitz. I actually think his singing is underrated. I tend to like his Falsetto sung songs. I just wish he would do his own freakin' Guitar solos. mad

He's probably one of those guys who has so much sex he has to make pacts with himself, like a heavy drinker.

He would if he COULD. As I stated earlier, Lenny's NOT a lead guitarist.
