Late '70s / Early '80s British Doo Wop Revival

[ I love this song. ]

I love Doo Wop music, in all of its incarnations. Anyone care to share their favorite Seventies/Very Early 80s Doo Wop revival songs?

Yeah, I noticed how 50's it sounded (latter half of the 50's of course).

I love some of that 50's stuff. I did a thread a while back about a song from the 50's. That didn't get any replies LOL

I'm looking to get more into Seventies Doo Wop revival. I've been on a powerpop kick lately, playing stuff like the Knack, the Rubinoos and the Romantics (played Tommy Tutone's "867-5309/Jenny" about 30 times a night ago) And now my tastes are spiraling into '70s doo wop.

What was the name of the thread you made?

Not sure if you would like Guy mitchell, song is pretty soft stuff, but I love the tune though.

That Guy Mitchell song is cool. I can see why I like your mixtapes so much.

And that Maisonettes song "Heartache Avenue" is pretty awesome. I'm going to track it down and download it. smile Thanks!

I love harmonizing in modern pop.

And BTW, this Maisonettes song that you made your thread on is exactly the type of tune I was aiming for when fishing for sugggestions on late '70s/early '80s doo wop revival. Thanks! If you have any more, feel free to share.

My tastes are very commercial, but sometimes obscure commerical if that makes any sense? Like my Alyssa Milano albums LOL. Iam very predictable and linear taste wise, but Iam OK with that.

U might like some Madness. Not doo woppy, but quirky nonetheless.

This song was big and quirky aswell:-

Britain in the 70's were much more interesting pop chart wise then the states

sexxxx, this track is HOTTT!!! clapping

Ohhh, Wiley and Roll Deep flowing over "Heartache Avenue"! How THROWED is that??!! I can't believe I haven't heard this.

*going to download this song asap*

His track "Wearing My Rolex" has been one of my joints this summer. Which coincidentally samples a popular UK garage track from the late 90s.

Iam glad I could help. As I said, in my mid-late teens, I would hear this UK based stuff. If only I coulda given you all the comps and cd's I had? I think some (very) old mates have some of them? Reminds me of my days on the ole' council estate. "best of times...worse of times" cliche LOL

Ok, sex, I'm feeling this clip, too.

You know, I've been meaning to get more into late 70s/early 80s ska and mod. I was flirting more with mod last year (and managed to get hooked on The Ordinary Boys before they broke up, The Beat and FYC's First album). But I jump around so much.

Mannn, I think I have a secret love affair with the UK music scene because my tastes fall so much in line with the stuff going on out there I find. I don't know why it's like that. But I have an affinity more towards UK music than my native US. Maybe it's because it's so sonically interesting and not afraid to be adventurous.

I'm actually quite mad that I'm not spending my 20s listening to tunes and going to gigs in the UK. Can we trade locations? You come to NYC, I go to London. Unfair, I know! lol

Ha. I dont live in London LOL. A few hours drive though. We often club in London at weekends though. Good fun.

Yeah, I noticed a sca influence with the ordinary boys. I like bits of sca, but never bothered looking into it though. You have such wide tastes in music, its not surprising you dont fully digest some of it.

My tastes are always rooted in pop, whilst you like alot of the underground stuff ontop of the pop stuff.

I feel where you're coming from. I like underground and leftfield stuff, too. But my heart is in melodies and harmonies, irrespective of whether it's commercial or obscure. I've got no problem blasting radio stuff, but I don't overlook stuff that isn't on the radio either. I'm hungry for a lot of sounds.

You'd be surprised how much The Ordinary Boys last album How To Get Everything You Want In Ten Easy Steps was rooted in ska and mod-like revival like The Jam. The last single from that album had a doo-wop vibe to it. Called "I Luv U." Pointless video, but really nice, harmonic tune.

The Ordinary Boys / I Luv U (Live on Popworld, 2007)

Also, if you go to the ordinary boys website they have a new track up called "Busy Wasting Time." It was the last track the boys recorded before they broke up. http://www.theordinaryboys.co.uk/ -- very summery, plays as soon as you enter the site.

I love that spinners track. No idea it was 70's though.

Mara, I remember a few people liking ordinary boys in the UK, and that "I luv u" ain't bad considering my general distaste for anything modern LOL.

OK, Iam going out on a limb here, so please dont hate LOL....love

Love the song and love the lyrics aswell:-

Of course I know that tune by Dire Straits. Play this next to some old school Huey Lewis & The News, some other powerpop goodies. I actually liked this more than "Money For Nothing."

This is far from doo wop, more in the same league of Born In The USA E-Street Band era Springsteen. But I got love for ya tunes nonetheless.

BTW, glad you were feeling that Ordinary Boys song. I wanted to post a better performance clip of it (since they're lipsyncing like hell in that one, but I wanted you to catch the more pronounced vocal harmonies).

The original by The 4 Seasons is the ultimate, hands down. Spinners is okay and they did a great job. But you can't top Frankie Valli's vocals.

Yeah, "walk of life" ain't close but it has a slight novalty feel though. Nice call on the Bruce Springsteen "born in the USA" thing. I never thought about it like that.

I also had no idea the drifters track was a cover eek

Huge fan and I cant believe I forgot this:

Cant strictly pigeonhole this track, but its got that quirkiness of Maisonettes etc...

And this is a gorgeous song too. Maybe a bit too Dylanesque?

Wanna throwback to classic 50s era Little Richard. Some of you folks may remember this tune a la Fergie's "Clumsy" [she did a good job sampling it]

Also, here's another really good Darts clip (just getting into them more and more, gotta track down an album by them) entitled "Daddy Cool/Girl Can't Help It" from 1977.
