The McCain ad that prompted this says nothing about race. Rather, it struck at what should be a central question in this race: Obama's preparedness to lead. This guy is an empty suit. (It's an expensive suit - but empty nonetheless.) Not only has he no relevant experience, he actually takes credit for the leadership and legislation of other people. (Most recent example: When in Europe, he touted himself as the head of the Senate Banking committee. He isn't even on that committee.)

If people make an issue of his race, Obama has every right to take umbrage and cry foul. But his opponent hasn't done that. Which is why this whole thing has backfired and the race is now a dead heat. People are getting wise.

I don't see it that way. What he's doing is trying to neutralize the use of race by the GOP, which has a long history of race-baiting tactics in presidential elections, in this campaign. He's not trying to stifle any dissent by use of the R word.

Any implication that he's quick to play the race card is unfounded. He didn't even want to mention race, to the point where blacks were and are wary of him, When Sen. Clinton criticized him or his campaign, he often hit back without reference to race. He even acknowledged that his relationship with Rev. Wright was a legitimate issue to address and explore, and dealt with it accordingly. He doesn't use race as his get-out-of-jail-free card.



I know what the McCain ad said. But remember also that Obama listed a number of factors yesterday OTHER THAN RACE which Bush and McCain will hit on and have hit on.



Well, in the short term, I think you might be right. But it could be Obama that won in the long term. By calling out his opponent(s) for using race tactics before they directly engage in them (assuming they have not already), it puts them in an awkward position. They may have the high ground now, because they made no mention of race, but if they do, then Obama will prove to be right. If they do not, his opponents keep the high ground on this issue, but race, which is likely the only reason Obama could lose this election, is off the table. Some play checkers, others play chess.

Obama may be taking a short-term hit for a long-term strategic advantage. You make good points, based on what I've seen, McCain hasn't played the race card. But ask Harold Ford, Jr. what the GOP will do down the stretch to a viable black candidate trying to break the color barrier. Obama wants to avoid that, and he has reason to believe the GOP will try it later, if they haven't tried it already. That's all I'm saying.
