So what exactly is the problem with "I Kissed a Girl"?

I seem to remember a pretty hate-filled thread about this song some time ago, but I finally heard it for the first time this morning, and I think it's pretty freakin' great.

Sure, it plays into all the worst stereotypes about going gay for media attention/just a phase etc., but Perry's just a kid, and a former Christian at that--think it's pretty refreshing and brave IMO.

And the music is kinda edgy and fun for pop radio--if it were a Peaches track, would people 'round here hate it as much?

I thought the song was okay at first, but I haven't really thought about it since it first came out. I certainly have no animosity toward it. She just seems a bit of a phony to me. She's a straight girl using the built-in fear factor around gay terms just to sell otherwise bland songs, I Kissed a Girl and U're So Gay. She's trying hard to be edgy, but she's still just fitting a mold. She neither ruffles my feathers nor holds my interest.

And I don't think there's any chance of Peaches doing a song as tame as this one. lol

I'm talking about the music. Add a little fuzz (so to speak razz) and lower production values, and it doesn't sound all that different.

I'm sure she would. She turned down offers to collaborate with Christina Aguilera and Britney Spears because she thought they were phony baloney.

Haven't heard U're So Gay, but I don't get the fear-factor thing. She's making a shitload of money by challenging that fear.

New York Magazine just wrote an article about this song, Lilo's exploits and other "faux lesbianism"
http://nymag.com/daily/in...g_new.html

Frankly, I think the article's a total crock and just a little homophobic

The article is dead on.

Lindsay Crackwhore and Katy Slutty FAIL.

And at the end of the day her song sucks ass.

Considering most of the people on this forum have listened to Prince jam and say,"Bobby, get me in the back" shake several times I doubt this is a space where you'd find teh fobez.

It's fucking awful- that's the problem with it! Her voice is absolutely cringe-worthy, as is her cloying attempt to seem cool and edgy by playing the bisexual card. The worst song of the year, if you ask me!

That's not true at all! Many of my favorite artists are big pop stars. However, this song is just vile.

That's exactly what's wrong with it. The fact that she's some loser ex-Christian singer who's doing it out of a need to rebel and shock just makes it all the more grating.

Now, Jill Sobule's "I Kissed a Girl"? Neither insulting nor pathetic. Infinitely superior. Go check it out.

So the problem is that she's not gay but she sang about kissing a girl and liking it?
Is there a rule somewhere that says she has to be gay to sing this kind of thing? I mean, there are girls who "kiss girls" just for the attention factor, right?

That's what she's singing about, and that's what the problem is. Every time a straight girl plays at being gay to get some guy's attention, it downplays and degrades women who genuinely are attracted to women, and just feeds the idea that women's sexuality is really only done as entertainment for men.

I don't consider it a remake, myself. It's just a song with the same title and with a similar theme. The difference is that in Sobule's, she really did like kissing a girl, and they end up leaving their menfolk, who they were bored with, for each and happiness. Perry's is just about making out with some chick to experiment and to thrill her boyfriend. She doesn't even get the girl's name. confused

I don't get that, and I'm gay (male, but still). How does that action have anything to do with how "real" lesbians (or bisexuals for that matter) are perceived?

that I get a little more, but I'm not convinced this song is all about that. Although she does repeat the line "I hope my boyfriend don't mind it," she seems to be generally turned on by the moment--for herself.

It just comes across to me as one of those brainless drunk girls at the club or a party who makes out with a girl for attention, then tells everyone how cool it is for more of the same attention.

As far as downplaying real queer women's sexuality, it does so in that the more people get used to the idea of straight girls making out just to entertain guys, the more people assume that that's all actual gay and bi women are doing, particularly if the women in question aren't gay stereotypes and look like they might be "straight".

Not really. If it weren't for the part from when the song starts to just after the song ends, it would be a classic!

Seriously, her voice is awful, the vocoder is awful, the style sounds cliched and fabricated, and so does her career.

totally nod

The song has a catchy beat, but overall its pretty annoying
and her wanna-be edgy girl persona is just another gimmick ala Avril Lavigne

Im sure this is the theme song for sorority girls across the nation though shrug

I Kissed a Girl sucks. Katy's voice is awful and the lyrics are just so bleh. Maybe I'm going too deep with it but a song like that should have an ounce of something clever or even something deep in there, no matter how superficial the song may start out but it's nowhere to be found on it and it's a pity. Oh well.

I don't know if it was touched on a different Katy Perry thread before but I figured that it could be brought up here. I wonder what would happen if a straight dude had some balls and sang a song like "I kissed a boy and I liked it." That would be some crazy shit but this song makes me wonder how people would react. Would it go to #1 and stay there? Hell would it even hit the charts? Makes me wonder confuse
