"Old School"?

I recently watched a countdown on a music channel here in Australia for "old school" rappers. Such a countdown could have been wildly entertaining if done properly. However, I was shocked and saddened to see the list filled with the likes of Missy Elliott (who I adore) and Eminem. In what sense of the world is that considered old school?

Last year I was skipping through the channel and wound up watching 106 & Patk. Well anyway, the old school joint of the day was about to be shown, so I decided to see who it would be. Well, it was Usher with "Yeah"

I can see how 90s is old school. But Usher's "Yeah" is merely no longer in triple-A rotation, and 9 year old kids probably don't think it is old school.

The Missy E they played was "One Minute Man", and the Eminem was "The Real Slim Shady". Both from this decade. neutral Are we that ancient?

When it comes to R&B, not just rap, I don't consider anything after 1984 as old school. I consider stuff like Con-Funk-Shun's "Electric Lady" that was released in the early part of 1985 as old school but it's easy for me to find the beginning of the change of sound in music. It would be after I graduated high school in May of 1985 and Shitney blew up that summer and changed things for the worst forever. So, when I refer to something as old school, "school" itself actually comes into consideration. lol
