So we are half way through the year basically and whats your feeling on whats come out???

Major disappointments? Surprises? Favorite Singles? favorite re-issues? most anticipated things to come? etc....

Anxiety

so far, my top 3 of 2008 are

M83 - saturday = youth
santogold - s/t
leslie hall - ceWEBrity

aside from the leslie album, i'm only listing the other two as faves because i've been listening to them more than anything else released this year, not because i think they're any life-altering masterpieces. they're just the best i've heard from 2008.

the leslie hall album, on the other hand, has changed my life dramatically. lol

Until now I've loved and rocked to these albums:

Cyndi Lauper - Bring ya to the brink

Mónica Naranjo - Tarántula

Robyn - Robyn (US edition with 2 bonus tracks)

And there's Madonna's Hard Candy, that I have a hate/love relationship for.

I'm always anticipating the new tATu album that will come out soon. The 2 singles, 220 and White Robe are truly magnificent.

Both Janet and Mariah's albums burned fast. To the point I regret having bought them.

Its been a weird year with alot of records that really are blowing my mind, most of which have come very recently.

Blowing my mind:
Magne F "a dot of black in the blue of your bliss" ( i dont think this one will be topped this year for me)

Morten Harket "letters from egypt"
Alanis Morrisette (great freaking record!!)
REM "accelerate"
Gary Louris "Vagabonds"

Good mentions: the new Jewel was a good one, im liking the Coldplay album, got it a week early here in nyc (legally).

On the pop front, holy crap this Ashlee Simpson song "Hot stuff" is great, someone did the right thing and played it without saying who it was, thats the best way to get un-biased opinions from anyone.

Also the Danity Kane record was alot better than i thought and the song "Striptease" better be a single and video! If this was the 80's there would 12" vinyl mixes already!

Still to come: john Mellencamp,Rick Springfield in July, lots of others too on the horizon

Let down: i agree the Janet and Carey burnt out so quick for me.

For me, it was kind of like 2004. Another year where a re-release/hits package by Michael Jackson was my favorite thing out (so far.) In 2004, it was The Ultimate Collection. 2008 it is now Thriller 25. That being said, I only really play Thriller 25 possibly once a week..at best.

Overall, I think the music charting the charts this summer is a lot worse than last summer. Kanye's "Stronger" while annoying was refreshing when it came out. I doubt that will happen again this summer. I have a bad feeling it will be a blend of "4 Minute" and "Get Silly" which makes me wanna puke. feeling ill

I was very impressed with Pharrell's work on Hard Candy and VERY dissapointed in Timbos work on that album AND as usual annoyed at Madonna's vocals.

I love Side Effects on Mariah's new album and I hope she either releases that or Migrate. Both surefire hits, especially Migrate.

Looking forward to buying N.E.R.D's new album. Hearing great things about it.

Heartily unimpressed with Rihanna repackaging GGGB, no point and keeps an old era going. Maroon 5 duet video is embarrassingly bad.

Was ever so slightly impressed with Ashlee Simpson's new album especially the track Never Dream Alone, she'd be dumb not to release it.

Janet's album SUCKED and Rock With U was her chance at a HUGE hit but no promo meant it sunk away johnwoo

PCD's new single bores the pants off me, I wish they'd just piss the hell off.

Basically, this year hasn't been so good for my music tastes biggrin

Nothing has blown me away so far, but I'd rank my 2008 albums this way:

9 (Very good)

Duffy- Rockferry

8 (Good)

Janet Jackson- Discipline
Sam Sparro- Sam Sparro
Goldfrapp- Seventh Tree

7 (Decent)

Hot Chip- Ready for the Floor
The Ting Tings- We Started Nothing

4 (Poor)

Madonna- Hard Candy

I'm mildly interested in Ladytron's new one, but I was a bit put off by the poor reviews here. I also have some interest in Cyndi Lauper and Vampire Weekend, but I've been going through so much older stuff lately that I haven't really kept up with a lot of new things.

Annie and The Cure will be changing that soon, though. biggrin

my top 10 of the year at this moment. i love every one of these albums for one reason or another:

Bon Iver, "For Emma, Forever Ago"
Goldfrapp, "Seventh Tree"
Hot Chip, "Made In The Dark"
Madonna, "Hard Candy"
Janet Jackson, "Discipline"
MGMT, "Oracular Spectacular"
Sigur Rós, "Með suð í eyrum við spilum endalaust"
Duffy, "Rockferry"
Al Green, "Lay It Down"
The Dodos, "Visiter"

also from this year, i've really also been into these a lot (i guess they'd probably be my 11-20, although probably not in this order:

Lykke Li, "Youth Novels"
Cut Copy, "In Ghost Colours"
M83, "Saturdays = Youth"
The Last Shadow Puppets, "The Age Of The Understatement"
Atlas Sound, "Let the Blind Lead Those Who Can See but Cannot Feel"
British Sea Power, "Do You Like Rock Music?"
Erykah Badu, "New Amerykah, Pt. 1"
Gnarles Barkley, "The Odd Couple"
k.d. lang, "Watershed"
Cyndi Lauper, "Bring Ya To The Brink"

and special mention to the Scarlett Johansson album "Anywhere I Lay My Head." It would be in my top 10 for the year except for the fact that I love absolutely everything about it except for her voice.
I don't want this to end

No disappointments because I didn't expect any good new shit to come out and I haven't bought any. I'm just waiting for Prince's next release. Other than that, I'll continue buying old music.

ive bought al greens latest effort and it was pleasant and it still is but all the songs give me the same kinda feeling. uhm other than that i have bought alain clark record and that wassent a disapointment although its a 2007 record. uhm other then that i have bought older music throughout the year.

things im looking forward too : stevie wonder : gospel inspired by lula
sly stone album( if only)
MJ album( although latest interviews about gaykon being involved that much disappoint me and i might not get my hopes up so i cant be disapointed)
and a few others.

Doesn't say much for this year based on this thread's popularity, but I actually think it's been pretty good so far.

The one theme I've picked up with is albums I like from artists with shitty names:

Drive By Truckers
MGMT
Hot Chip
Ting Tings
Santogold

Is anyone really going to be remembering these names in five years?! biggrin
