IPOD HELP!!! : Anybody running their Itunes songs from.... an external harddrive?
Im thinking about doing that, all those songs and videos totally ruined one of my computers. So i was thinking about taking all the files ( raw files and itunes files) and moving them to an external harddrive... Has anyone else ever did this? Im scared of messing my ipod and my music up. Its a great way to clean up my space on my computer AND my harddrive, because I have alot of duplicate songs, plus i want to change they way they are arranged.... Anybody know what Im talking about? Would itunes recognize the external harddrive?

i haven't quite figured that out, but when i buy stuff from iTunes, i do copy the files into folders in my external hard drive - i don't really use my iTunes software for a jukebox, so my goal is usually to keep it free of files.
there's probably a way better way to go than how i'm doing it, but it works for me.

My files are on an external hard drive but someone set it up for me. I try not to mess with it myself. I still use my iTunes but if my HD is not plugged in some songs I can't access. This doesn't affect my iPod though. Been gone for a minute, now I'm back with the jump off

Yes. From day one. My laptop harddrive was as big as the iPod's so I just had to.
Not only works fine but also you can format your PC and keep your library safe and ready for the new use (you just have to copy two files from the old itunes into the new one)

Yes, I got all my itunes songs on an external harddrive. Works fine for me. See the man with the blue guitar, maybe one day he`ll be a star...

I moved it all to an external harddrive recently when my computer ran out of space - works fine.
Here's the article I used to do this, from iLounge, a great iPod/iTunes site: http://www.ilounge.com/in...ard-drive/

I do it as well because my iTunes library was as big as my old PowerBook's hard disk. "Whitney was purely and simply one of a kind." ~ Clive Davis

A good idea might be to just dump everything onto your iPod and keep that hooked up to your computer, that way you can run the songs on your computer but if you want to go somewhere you can just disconnect your iPod and have everything with you.
I use an external hard drive, and when you change it over, you'll have to change the directory where new tunes will be written to and let the computer update the file extensions. It can be time consuming, but ultimately it's worth it because if your computer hard drive crashes (which happened to me last year, luckily I had everything on the external) you won't lose anything.

I transferred my itunes and Limewire libraries to an external HD and everything went fine EXCEPT all of the imported Limewire songs reverted back to their original filenames. They did not retain the new song or album names I'd given them after they were imported to itunes. Now, if I try to play a song it says it can't be found. So I'll have to reimport and rename all of these songs the next time I sync up my iPod. Just food for thought.
Here's another good article on doing a transfer http://lifehacker.com/sof...238296.php
