Nikka Costa - worth exploring or not?

Is she funky? Or is she bland?

I've never heard any of her music.

She's not known in the UK.

get her 3 adult albums!

The 1st one is super rare and if features some kickass rock/funk tunes like the underrated Master Blaster! Excellent!

Please tell me you're not talking about his travesty of a contribution to "Push & Pull" in his Las Vegas Alladin show eek . I love Prince as a musician as much as anybody here, but the more you listen to Nikka, the more it's understood that she's needs no improvement from anyone, least of all Prince singing a live duet with her in some fucked up key falloff

"Like A Feather" is the jam, and some of the songs on that first LP are decent.

Actually, I only like 'Like A Feather', the rest of that album just goes any direction, it's not funny anymore.....she even tries to be some sort of a female Lenny Kravitz on one song.....barf

I went and saw Nikka last night here in Manhattan and she's a great performer and her music is great too. I'm going to be checking her music out now. Plus, she told us that she has a new CD coming out on September 23rd that I think it's called "Pebble to a Stone". She played some cuts from that CD and they were rockin!

This thread is too funny. Nikka is being labeled a Lenny Kravitz clone on one hand and shit hop on the other. Lenny Kravitz is clearly not shit hop so somebody is way off base.

Absolutely one of the best artists of this decade. She's funky as hell, can sing has unconventional sex appeal. She went too long between albums and I think she suffers from musicindustryitis. I think her art would be more expressive and pure if they just let her do her thing. Love her and yes, recommend the hell out of her nod

Yeah, we knew. I told purplecam when the show was announced that he NEEDED to be there. lol

I have to apologize to purplecam for leaving him when Nikka came on, but I wasn't about to watch her from the back! I don't know if it was noticeable from where he was, but people up front got lots of nipple-action. eek

I saw her live with Prince and a couple of times with Wendy & Lisa and she didn't do much for me. A bunch of my friends started going to her shows and raving about her, but I wasn't interested. I had her 2 albums and liked them, but didn't love them -- except for Push and Pull, which is a bazillion times better than Prince's version of it. So solely for the love of that song, I finally went and saw her at the Roxy (i think) right before New Year's Eve. I got to the show during her 2nd or 3rd number because I was just getting back into town after Christmas -- anyway -- WOW! FUCKING BRiLLiANT! She was incredibly dynamic. Powerful stage presence and voice. Great band, too. She's definitely funky, definitely worth checking out.

Nikka told us explicitly last night that she suffered from musicindustryitis (which included a funny line about cameltoe lol ) and that this new album will be free of major label interference.

Dude, that was cool, I wasn't bothered at all. It was great seeing you again & it was fun hanging with you! We couldn't see all the nipple-action that you got to see but I'm not surprised. She was dancing wildly in that loose blouse of hers lol It was great fun, I tell ya!

Last time I saw her about three years ago and it was all about ass crack action, well it was more than a crack. So it's usually one or the other. lol I tend to appreciate her more live than the recordings. She is quite funky.

I will agree that Nikka is much better live than on record. All three times I've seen her, including last night, I've been blown away.

I had more fun last night than at any other show so far this year. And I'm not just saying that because Nikka's nipples were determined to tear holes through that flimsy top she was wearing. Goddamn. lol

Setlist:

Keep Wanting More
Like A Feather
Can'tneverdidnothin'
Denial Twist (The White Stripes)
Fooled Ya Baby
Push & Pull
Cry Baby
Stuck To You
Happy In The Morning
Everybody Got Their Something
Can't Please Everyone

Encore:
Corners Of My Mind
When My Man Cries

90 minutes
