Man, this SUCKS! I was really enjoying this project.

I suppose we'll have to rely on the burnt mixes apparently circulating via mail?

Though maybe this won't be as big a hurdle as we imagine. After all, nothing on muxtape.com is downloadable. Perhaps that'll be a saving grace. shrug

Best thing would be yousendit links with the songs as an album.

So what are we gonna do in the meantime? I was a late add-on, so I'm unsure of some things. Is there, in fact, a snail mail swap of burnt CDs? Are there alternative ways to do this online or via email?

No mp3s of Matronik's mix available as his internet access is limited at the moment. We should establish a deadline for making a decision if muxtape is still down for the foreseeable future.

Don't think so. They seem to be targeting streams on internet.

Damn, this really is our Achilles-heel.

I'm looking for alternatives, if this isn't resolved within a week. In the meantime I haven't heard Matroniks mix. He can't upload due to internet-connection. hmmm

So, two days now.

I just reread the original thread (anx' mixtape thread) and the preferred way of distribution (after muxtape) was yousendit.com or sendspace.com. That would have to be orgnoted, cuz it's probably not allowed on org.

oh. I didn't know what that was referring to. No, the page looked slightly different, like a technical difficulty.

I'll be really bummed if this falls apart for us. sad

Don't worry. It won't. We've got alternatives... they're just slightly less convenient than muxtape.

One day after the popular mixtape uploading site Muxtape suddenly went down due to what it said was a "problem" with the Recording Industry Association of America, the industry lobbying group revealed that it had been keeping an eye on the site since its launch earlier this year.

"For the past several months, we have communicated concerns to Muxtape on behalf of our members," read a statement from the RIAA issued on Tuesday. "Muxtape has not yet obtained authorization from our member companies to host or stream copies of their sound recordings."

The trade group issued a slightly longer and more detailed explanation to Portfolio magazine, which explained that in addition to communicating their legal concerns over the past few months, the RIAA "repeatedly" tried to work with Muxtape to have illegal content taken down. "Muxtape was hosting copies of copyrighted sound recordings without authorization from the copyright owners. Making these recordings available for streaming playback also requires authorization from the copyright owners."

In the meantime, Fred Von Lohmann, a senior intellectual property attorney at the Electronic Frontier Foundation told RollingStone.com that he believes Muxtape could be on pretty steady legal grounds if it decides to fight the shutdown order from the RIAA. Von Lohmann said the site is protected under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act of 1998, which provides "safe harbor" for sites that host material on behalf of users, which is the same defense used by sites like YouTube.

"I think they have a strong legal defense," Von Lohmann said. "The problem is if they might not have that money to go to court and take on the RIAA." The lawyer speculated that legal fees for such a case could be in the range of $2-$3 million.

I hate the industry so much. We can't share our own mixes that aren't even downloadable? Our ears must be controlled? I can't wait for the death of the industry. can't wait.

It does seem silly. We aren't allowed to hear any music that hasn't been already purchased by us or has the consent of the artists and labels like for radio and video channels.

Time to go ahead with plan B.

Well, I suppose the good side of this is that now we can mix our tapes exactly as we like -- segues and all. (Assuming we use yousendit.com or something.) The files will be enormous, though.

I was thinking we had a bit more time due to being off muxtape and worked over 100 hours last week on a giant grant proposal at work so I'm not quite ready. My tracks are all set but there is a little glitch that TRON is going to fix for me tomorrow or Tuesday and I have to finish my write up. I'm so sorry ~ is anyone else ready? I can be next week. I've been living in a boxed the past week and barely even sleeping.

Well, I, for one, forgive you. But tell me: Are you planning to just provide a link to your files somewhere? I'm so clueless.

I'm pretty confused as well, but I think that once someone with high speed uploads my mix to yousendit there will be a link. I think it will appear on the write up of my songs. This sure got complicated didn't it? But, I've LOVED hearing pieces of friends souls through their musical journeys.
