elvis costello at the tabernacle in atlanta show #1 elvis costello is playing 2 nights at the tabernacle in atlanta to end his us tour. the tabernacle is an old church that was converted to a music venue around the time of the 1996 olympics. (prince played there in 2000) i have seen elvis in concert many times (12) and he is on top of his game at this point. the band he is touring with is basically the attractions with a different bass player, and they really rock.
highlights from tonights show were party girl, i want to be loved, i can't stand up for falling down, girls talk, deep dark truthful mirror/you really got a hold on me, dust #1, alison/suspicious minds. his latest album has a lot of really strong material and was well represented in the set list. the show was 2.5 hours long, small venue, really good sound. tomorrow show #2. ------------------------------------------------

I can't get over the fact that I missed him TWICE this year in the Bay Area. The second time (last month) I had to be out of state, but no excuse for the first time. I've missed EVERYONE this year.
Introducing my new girlfriend to EC (she hates Prince) has got me on a big Elvis jag. I'm finding that I really, really love "All This Useless Beauty", especially the Rhino reissue -- that bonus disc is the BOMB.

this year in terms of concerts has been amazing. as far as people that i respect and love musically, who are still alive, my top three are prince, elvis costello, and pat metheny. i saw prince twice in atlanta and twice at the celebration. elvis played a show in june and now 2 shows in november. the only regret was pat metheny, his 2 shows in atlanta conflicted with prince's shows in april, so i opted for both prince shows.
yes, those re-issues look awesome. i haven't gotten many because i have the single discs from the original issue, and it's hard to spend the money, but i know i need to get them. the 2002 elvis shows have been awesome, long shows, great set lists, songs that span his career and each show has included songs not typically played over the years. i realize from looking at the initial review that the "highlights" i mentioned were highlights for me, because they were all songs not played in at the june atlanta show. i'll try to gear my "highlights" differently in tonights review. off to the show. the set list somewhat out of order: pump it up slow down you belong to me radio radio i hope you're happy now tear off your own head (it's a doll revolution) you little fool party girl (i don't want to go to) Chelsea 15 petals i want to be loved 45 spooky girlfriend clubland the judgement i can't stand up for falling down indoor fireworks man out of time Sweet Dreams girls talk deep dark truthful mirror/you really got a hold on me beyond belief watching the detectives (what's so funny 'bout) peace, love and understanding? when i was cruel #2/my funny valentine uncomplicated my mood swings dust 2… alison/put your sweet lips a little closer to the phone/suspicious minds no action [This message was edited Fri Nov 8 2:21:16 PST 2002 by medoc2003] ------------------------------------------------

Ex-Moderator | I saw him in Minneapolis a while back also. The whole Alison drifting into Suspiscious Minds thing blew me away! Not to mention closing the second encore with I Want You drifting into Almost Blue!
The man puts on an amazing show. I love Elvis Costello. |

For a young guy that lives in North Carolina that got into EC back in '94, going to an EC show seems like a dream. He's hard to come by around here- or maybe I just don't hear much about his shows...
One day I must go to a show, EC is awesome.

north carolina is not that far from atlanta. i hate to say it, but you might ought to have made the road trip.
i believe that the atlanta shows were the end of the second leg of the u.s. tour. i doubt he'll be back for a couple of years. that's why i had to see both shows. ------------------------------------------------
