Red Hot Chili Peppers disband

Red Hot Chili Peppers
Anthony Kiedis and co. step away from music
May 22, 2008

Red Hot Chili Peppers have disbanded for at least a year.

Singer Anthony Kiedis has revealed that the band members will step away from music to concentrate on their individual lives.

The singer told Rolling Stone that the band have decided to have no involvement in the band for 12 months after becoming exhausted with their hectic schedule.

The star went on to explain that he will spend more time with his family, while bassist Flea and guitarist John Frusciante are set to work on individual musical projects.

"We're disbanded for the moment," he said. "We took a very long time to make the 'Stadium Arcadium' record (released in 2006). It was a gruelling, long haul and it followed two other very long hauls, 'Californication' (1999) and 'By the Way' (2002).

"So we didn't really stop until the tour ended last year. We were all emotionally and mentally zapped at the end of that run. The discussion was, 'Let's not do anything Red Hot Chili Peppers-related for a minimum of one year, and just live and breathe and eat and learn new things.'"

He added: "I'm just home, hanging out with this really cool little kid, learning how to surf. But I'm starting to get just a little bit of a tingle that it would be nice to start thinking about songs and pieces of music. But just pieces."

Yep, I heard about that. Great band, serious history. There is supposed to be a movie in the works about them as well.

when they re-band, they should focus more on performing than recording, or at least put out a short album or ep. getting through all of that stadium arcadium thing was not one of the easier listening experiences i've ever had. dead

Cool, get some time off and do your thing, then get back and do it again. Hope it'll be a kick-ass album when they come back too.

nod Love me some Chili Peppers. After being together almost 30 years and consistently putting out quality music they deserve to take a break. I wish them the best. Oh, and a movie about them if done right could be off da chain. They've had quite a bit of drama and came through to the other side. thumbs up!

I agree.. tons of great material on that album, but it was just sensory overload. I was never really able to penetrate it. Too much information.

Ummm, they haven't done ANY surf rock since that time. I can't think of a single song of theirs, from before OR after BSSM that could fall into the Surf Rock category.

As for the funk, it's still there, just not as plentiful as it once was. They've gone in different directions with their music, but they still revisit the funk from time to time on cuts like "Hump De Bump" and "Can't Stop". Personally, I think some of their best stuff has come in the post-BSSM years.

yeah it was way too long. There's so much good music in it, I understand how it ends up as a double album, but there's not enough variety. Anthony's parts in particular wear thin.

I still like what they do, but length has been an issue for some time. Even Blood Sugar was too long.

I disagree about Stadium Arcadium somewhat.

Now I am a Peppers fan since Mother's milk when I was 13. BSSM was also a masterpiece, but since then the albums got very formula based and Kiedis's vocals and yabba dabba do ba were really making me nuts. Then add into mix the fact that 2nd to U2 they became the most overplayed band on the rock radio after years of barely getting any play... and I was done....
.
BUT THEN>>>>> The rebirth of Frusciante, his solo albums "Curtains and the Will to death, and all the others are not only brilliant but show the direction Stadium would take.

Where Flea once was the primary writer, this is John's band now. He multi-tracked everything and this was his pet sounds.

Also Kiedis;s vocals are actually pretty good and close as ever to in tune.. and Rubin did a wonderful job mixing them with Frusciante's.

The album is very amibitious and would be an A+ single disc, but I appreciate the extra effort. Not to mention the B sides are pretty damn good.

I think the break will be great for them, and I can't wait to see how many albums John can release in the next 2 yrs!!
Music is the best...

lol It's tough to listen when John is obviously a better singer! I know Anthony is a crucial part of the Chili Peppers' soul, but his vocals & lyrics haven't very well suited their move to more melodic music.

That's the hard part about being a musician with children - I think you've got to pick one or the other.

I for one couldn't imagine going a week without being with my kids. The guitar and shit can stay in the basement, I guess.

maybe it could have been split up into 2 albums, with the second half released in the middle of their tour. i dunno. but yeah, i can't listen to anthony's voice for that long in one sitting.
