The Joni-Jimi Connection Inspired by paligap's The Beat Of Black Wings & Coyote threads.
Excerpts from a Jimi Hendrix diary entry dated March 19/20, 1968...
March 19 Arrived in Ottawa - Beautiful hotel...Strange people...Beautiful dinner Talked with Joni Mitchell on the phone -- I think I'll record her tonight with my excellent tape recorder. (knock on wood). Hmm...can't find any wood --- everything's plastic. Went down to the club to see Joni - fantastic girl with heaven words. We all got to party. OK, millions of girls - March 20 We left Ottawa city today - I kissed Joni goodbye, =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= From a Joni Mitchell interview in Rolling Stone magazine- 12/15/94 What's the most random celebrity encounter you've ever had? I met Jimi Hendrix at the Capitol Theatre in Ottawa, and after his set, he came down, and he brought a big reel-to-reel tape recorder. He introduced himself very shyly and said, "Would you mind if I taped your show?" I said, "Not at all." And later that evening, we went back, we were staying at the same hotel. He and his drummer Mitch [Mitchell], the three of us were talking. It was so innocent. But management, all they saw was three hippies. We were outcasts anyway. A black hippie! Two men and a woman in the same room. So they kept telling us to play lower. It was a very creative, special night. We were playing like children. Describe Jimi in three words. I could tell you in a paragraph - I'm not good at snack-size bites. His main concern at that time was that he wanted to drop the phallic aspects of his showmanship. The big, flamboyant dick stuff was offensive to him, and he wanted to stop it. But every time he tried, he told me, the audience would boo. He wanted to take a different kind of band out, with a brass section. OK, three words? SENSITIVE. SHY. SWEET. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

The man behind the icon...
Y'know I just saw this doc on the Who. In it, Pete says his whole reason to coming to Monterey was because Jimi was stealing his smash-everything-up routine. Everything else I've ever saw said that they just both did it as a gimmick and the Who had done it first but there was never any competition in regards to who could out do the other. Until Monterey...
Then the Who really didn't do it as much... | |

Thanks, tA.
I enjoyed reading his humor, and find it refreshing that he had a plan for musical growth and his future as an artist beyond the "dick" stage. Just goes to show there are many facets to all of us, beyond what we sometimes see in the public. Virtually all of the drug addicted people I have met in my life have been and are very sweet and kind people at their core - drugs DO change people, situations, and even performance style. Sounds like Jimi was no different. Oh...and thanks for the transcript...I was struggling to read some of it. "Love and compassion are necessities, not luxuries. Without them humanity cannot survive."

There was a description of that night that I'd read, where the hotel management came to talk about the noise, and the door opens to Jimi's smoke framed silhouette, and must have freaked out the poor guy who had to tell them to turn it down. My Legacy
