Sextonseven, you were right!

love love

I've picked up Kaleidoscope, Juju and A Kiss in the Dreamhouse over the past few months, and I've fallen in love! I always knew I would like Siouxsie and the Banshees, but I never gave them enough attention. Juju and A Kiss in the Dreamhouse warmed me up, but the Kaleidoscope remaster has pushed me over the edge! What a great, great, great band with such an extensive musical palette!

My faves so far:

Israel- such a delicious bass groove keeps me coming back every time! This is quickly becoming one of my favorite songs by anyone. So hypnotizing and mysterious! drool

Happy House- a perfect slice of post punk pop! Siouxsie's ghostly oohing at the beginning and the end is simply chilling! This is a perfect, perfect single, coupled with a fantastically fun video. Classic!

Christine- another great poppy gem coupled by another great video!

Red Light- seedy synth pop at its best! Siouxsie totally nails the lascivious and lusty delivery. Tantalizing!

Melt!- Siouxsie turns into a sultry torch singer on this dark and romantic lullaby. It sounds ancient and gets into my bones!

Other favorites that don't have videos:

Hybrid- such a disarmingly beautiful track! The high bass playing really renders this song as very poignant and heartfelt.

Lunar Camel- evil and experimental synth dirge, and I love it!

Desert Kisses- an indelible melody tucked inside layers of post punk fog. Gorgeous!

Embarrassing edit. The Rapture is a Banshees album AS WELL as a band. redface

You should also check out the album TINDERBOX as well. The most inquisitive thing about this album is that although the melodies are light , the thematic choices are very much dark and ominous. For example , songs like "The Sweetest Chill" , "Cities In Dust" , "Lullaby" , "Umbrella" , and others are beautiful and simply takes my breath away. In my opinion , TINDERBOX showcases what is probably the band at its tightest and most invigorated. smile

Tinderbox is definitely on my wish list! I also really want The Scream and Hyaena. Picked up Join Hands a few days ago!

Kaleidoscope is not one of my favorite Banshees' albums, but I'm glad you like it, Moonbeam! It's their most new wave sounding record which makes sense that it would appeal to you the most. I prefer the darker and more refined Tinderbox and the experimental Peepshow albums myself. Juju would be my third favorite Banshees release. The single "Christine" is exquisite, though. Have you seen the video for "Red Light"?

Tinderbox is pretty much flawless I think. The weakest song might be "92˚", but every other track is excellent. The b-sides included on the CD are very cool also.

"Christine", "Happy House" and "Isreal" have been three of my favorite songs since high school. mushy

"Tinderbox" is a classic as well. I also recommend "Through the Looking Glass" it's an album of covers, but they do some incredible versions of some songs - including "Strange Fruit" by Billie Holiday - it's haunting.

Just kidding - but, I'm still sick of it and I haven't listened to it in about 15 years (seriously).

I haven't heard Tinderbox or Peepshow aside from one single from each ("Cities in Dust" and "Peek-a-boo". I'm surprised you don't like Kaleidoscope more! I often prefer more cohesive albums, but when an album showcases diversity in such a masterful way (like Sign o' the Times), it really can show off an artist's extensive musical palette. I like it a lot more than even when I started this thread! Maybe it is a new wave thing, but I think the songwriting is top notch, and there are some disarmingly beautiful songs on it.

I don't have a problem with the songwriting at all. It's the new wave thing that turns me off a little actually. The album sounds a little too flimsy to me. I don't think that new wave works for the Banshees as well as punk (The Scream) or goth (Juju). For example, I much prefer the live version of "Paradise Place" on the Nocturne album. There's a lot more power in that recording.

Maybe I'm being overly critical because I'm a fan, but like Prince, I always thought the Banshees made videos that looked cheap. lol Love the song "Dazzle" though.

They do look very low-budget until around 1988. Her hair is way cool in this video, though.

Oh, but the cheap videos are the charming ones! I definitely agree about Prince's videos by the way- they're quite embarrassing in some cases!

Kaleidoscope is the equivalent of Prince's 1979 self titled album. It was the Banshees following the times before discovering their signature sound on the next LP. nod

How would you rank the Banshees' albums? What would your top 10/20 songs be?

I would rank the studio albums in this order:

Tinderbox
Peepshow
Juju
Hyæna
The Scream
Through The Looking Glass
A Kiss In The Dreamhouse
Superstition
Kaleidoscope
The Rapture
Join Hands
