THEY WILL POSSESS YOUR CHART: Death Cab for Cutie¡¯s second major label release, on Atlantic, will top next Tuesday¡¯s chart with a projected first-week tally of 140-150k, spurred by the hit single ¡°I Will Possess Your Heart.¡± That puuts the Seattle PoMo band far ahead of Reprise¡¯s still-dead Frank Sinatra, who¡¯ll bow in the neighborhood of 80-85k, and Island/IDJ¡¯s Mariah Carey, with an expected 65-70k. The debuting Jason Mraz (Atlantic) and Leona Lewis (Syco/J/RMG), should complete the Top 5, as both roll toward 60-65k. Welsh thrush Duffy (making her debut on the revived Mercury label), who¡¯s riding a growing buzz from her irresistible single ¡°Mercy,¡± will battle second-weeker Neil Diamond (Columbia) and the down-sliding Madonna (WB) for the sixth position, as all three head toward 55-60k. Toby Keith (Showdog/UMe) should wind up at #9, with 45-50k, while a fifth debut, 10 Years (Universal Republic), will vie with Keith Sweat (Rhino), both trending toward 30-35k. And now, we return our focus to the second round of the NBA Playoffs. (5/16a)

A damn shame! It's a better record than that! Just heard "Can't B Good" on R&B radio but considering it was satellite, maybe that doesn't help sell records. The Rihanna song is "Irreplaceable" part 2, even the video is the same shit, im not surprised its number one since, downloads are nothing more than labels buying their own chart positions, im not sure why no one has caught on to this, downloads are faceless purchases, no one has a clue where they are coming from and who is buying them.
Also what is with this current chart generation and labels sitting on singles for so damn long? The Danity Kane single is 4 months old, so what its in the Top 10, cash in, you got good tracks on the record, it went gold, you should have at least been up to the third single at this point, labels have no clue, thats what happens when you let "marketing majors" run shit. PCD will debut their new single on TV May20th and then it will go up for sale the same day, its all very secretive right now, but coming together quick, already playing shows overseas, booked some NYC concerts on the DL, headlining the MTV movie awards with Coldplay, and doing both summer concert series events this summer. Go Duffy! She deserves to have a massive hit with "Mercy" in the US. It's a shame to see it languishing at number 66. Hopefully the album will have legs. To a certain extent, but it still depends who you are. If you are Paul McCartney and strike a deal with Starbucks to release that is relevant, and cds do matter, if you are J Holliday or someone like that putting out an album, you might as well just release a ringtone, because that is all you are worth for the most part, and though those ringtones may sell tons, the artist gets about 1% of it. I mean, the way you're talking, no one will release music at all! The truth is that artists like that (coldplay, radio head and many others) are in a position that they can call the shots, they all have fan bases, and they all know how to do this stuff on their own. THAT IS THE KEY, 90% of the industry artists are too lazy or not smart enough to do this on their own, and also dont have the "Bank" to do it. I know people always say "just put it out on your own" but its not as easy as u think, just come to NYC and go to the clubs and see bands who pressed their own cds for about 1000 dollars, sell about 100 at a gig and lose half that money, so its not as easy as everyone thinks. Now if you have the name, or something than its all good. I mean everyone is doing something like this now, because they are tired of going the label route. Coldplay,NIN,Radiohead and Magne F (of a-ha) gave it away at first, then sold a cd for the most part. Prince , Lenny, and once again magne F of a-Ha put their new cds in Magazines and Newspapers for free to get a wider audience, and than things like the Eagles,REO,Loverboy etc signing with Walmart exclusively to sell their stuff. And the last thing which is working 100% is the starbucks deal, since regular retail is gone, the likes of McCartney,Morrisette,Mellencamp,Mitchell,Dylan,Norah,Carly and many others are going to starbucks because its where they can get their cds up-front in view, and also played in stores, and lets face it, the Starbucks stores outnumber retail 100-1 at this point. Even NIN and Coldplay with their ideas of giving away records or going only digital chicken out and end up releasing their stuff on CD anyway. Nobody is ready to go there because the fact that given the choice, people won't pay shit for a download...Maybe it will be all digital (I hope not) or maybe it will go back to vinyl....I just hope the album as a format does not become totally irrelevant. No,I'm not saying that artists will stop making albums altogether Just saying that CD sales will continue to become irrelevent.Look around...there aren't even alot of record stores left where you can buy CDs! Why do you think Madonna signed a new record deal with a touring company (LiveNation) as opposed to another record label? Many other artists are gonna start doing the same thing...putting more money and effort into their tours.Especially longtime artists who don't really have anything to prove (Madonna and Prince, for example).Janet would be wise to do something like this, too.

That might be what happens with real fans still buying music. I mean, the way you're talking, no one will release music at all! Well the proof is in the "boxscore" as they say. The top touring acts are Bon Jovi, Bruce, the Stones, Elton, Billy Joel etc..none of them are in their "prime selling days" or even on the radio or video stations, but this is nothing new, these artists are not dumb. Like Billy Joel said when indcuting Mellencamp into the Hall of Fame, "no one is selling records anymore" and then said "congrats John, u outlived the music business" and its true, Mellencamp has a new record coming out in July and he signed with the HEAR for the record, which gives him a very large % of the sales, so even if he sells 100,000 he will be called a failure, but in the bank, is more than anyone in the top 10 is getting off their million sellers. "We went where our music was appreciated, and that was everywhere but the USA, we knew we had fans, but there is only so much of the world you can play at once" Magne F
