question about iTunes vs. Billboard and World charts

i could be wrong but, are the iTune charts more relevant than published charts now?. (i.e. Billboard) it gets confusing on which artist has the true #1 album or single sometimes. while artist A is #1 in iTunes yet artist B is #1 on Billboard. which does the industry recognize more? and are the iTunes charts broken down by geographical location? iTunes Ireland, US, Canada..like the Billboard charts? thank you for your help.

VoicesCarry

The industry standard (now and for the foreseeable future) is Billboard, which combines sales and airplay. iTunes does not even offer an accuarate representation of the Hot Digital Tracks or Hot Digital Songs charts.

iTunes is not the sole digital vendor, but it is the major one, which is why many people look to it to judge who will top the charts this week (for example, all smart chartwatchers knew last week that Rihanna was going to have a #1 hit with Take a Bow simply because her iTunes sales were so strong).

and are the iTunes charts broken down by geographical location?

Yes, because iTunes stores are completely different depending on your geographical location.

And this point i wouldnt even put trust in "downloads" because like i said its a faceless purchase, much in the way "soundscan" is far from an accurate take, its just more accurate than the previous way, but not by much. Discount pricing and dumping are still used to manipulate the system, which is why major labels own stock in the "soundscan" company.

ah, no they don't. it's a privately held company.

Then try to reconcile them, if you can.
But you don't even remember, do you?"

Dumping is when labels cut wholesale and list prices to stores so they buy more of it to get a higher chart debut. Some infamous examples, Destinys Child and Mariah Carey with 49cent singles for "bootylicious" and "loverboy" debuting at number 1 and 2. Dumping is also when Labels give a discount to stores if they buy alot more of a title, an example of this would be the 2 Rkelly and JayZ collabo cds, labels cut the seling price to stores in half to get the product into the stores for initial lower sale prices.

Another form of "dumping" is not as "shady" its just what labels do with releases when they have no time to promote or do any kind of work for it. An exammple for last year would be the "Seal" album and also the Duran Duran record.
