Is Midnight Star worth getting into? Almost grabbed their greatest hits at amoeba tonight...but bought 702 instead ("Steelo" is my jam.)
Anyway, is Midnight Star in the vein of Zapp, Dazz Band, Gap Band, etc? I'll leave it alone babe...just be me

If you like 80s electrofunk and R&B,you will like Midnight Star. We just had a really good thread devoted to them: http://prince.org/msg/8/271139 They're performing in my area next month

No Parking On the Dance Floor and the Planetary Invasion albums are must-haves.
Their earlier and later stuff was also good but Planetary Invasion is my favorite Midnight Star album. " I´d rather be a stank ass hoe because I´m not stupid. Oh my goodness! I got more drugs! I´m always funny dude...I´m hilarious! Are we gonna smoke?"

NO PARKING ON THE DANCE FLOOR..you must check out this album....if only for the title track, 'Love Song' and 'Freak A Zoid'

As mentioned the No parking on the dance floor and planetary
invasion albums are their absolute best. I didn't care for the headlines album too much. Their self titled release in 1988 was fairly good. Standout songs were don't rock the boat and snake in the grass. Don't laugh at my funk
This funk is a serious joint

Anyway, is Midnight Star in the vein of Zapp, Dazz Band, Gap Band, etc? Yeah, they jam just as hard as those groups you mentioned. Andy is a four letter word.

was fairly good. Standout songs were don't rock the boat and snake in the grass. Yeah, they got better with that album. I love "Snake In The Grass". It's a hard jam like "Freak-A-Zoid". I also like "Pamper Me" which is a synthy type jam that sounds like it was influenced by the Minneapolis Sound that a lot of groups were doing at that time. I didn't care for "Don't Rock The Boat" at all though. Andy is a four letter word.

I would have to listen to engine no. 9 again to remember how it sounded but i probably wasn't interested back then because it probably sounded like everything they had already done. That's why i liked the self titled album a lot better because they updated their sound at the time. What about the work it out album? Was that any good? Don't laugh at my funk

I had heard the song "Headlines" and didn't care for it. I had also heard the song "Midas Touch" and didn't care for it too much either. When I heard "Engine No. 9" which was faster and funkier, I bought the 12 Inch rather than the album. As for "Work It Out", I don't have that album. I had never heard of Midnight Star until "Freak-A-Zoid" came out. I do have the song "Work It Out" on their Anniversary CD and I like it. I do recall Midnight Star having a new single on the radio from a new album in 1989 but it didn't do well and I never heard it again. Same with Cameo, I remember hearing a new single from them in 1989 also and never heard it again. . . [Edited 5/28/08 12:24pm] Andy is a four letter word.

I never liked the song "Headlines" either.Didn't really care for the hip-hop sound that they were aiming for in that song.

Seems like Headlines aint gettin' no love 'round here but I sure dug it.
Best songs IMHO were the title track and Get Dressed. Could only find this crappy sounding "live" performance for Headlines but you'll get the idea: [Edited 5/28/08 15:46pm]

I agree."Snake In The Grass" is one of their best latter-day jams. I didn't care for "Don't Rock The Boat" at all though.
Same here.I didn't like it for the same reason I didn't like the "Headlines" song.....didn't care for the hip-hop elements that they were using. They didn't need to mess around with rap, they already had a cool, distinctive sound.
