On The Dunes is my second favorite -- I love it because the musicians get to stretch out at the end--probably the most freedom since Aja.....

That would be 'I.G.Y.' from Donald's solo debut The Nightfly. I don't know what it stands for. But the whole record is excellent, excellent stuff.

I.G.Y. stands for International Geophysical Year. It was an international scientific effort that lasted from July 1, 1957, to December 31, 1958. Scientists from each nation contributed to a number of projects designed to promote scientific and technological advancement.

Fagen's song was kind of an ironic look at the difference between what we expect and how things actually turn out. Many people at the time (1957) assumed that in the ensuing decades, the world would see the kind of futuristic advancements that Fagen named in the song -- "spandex jackets", "undersea by rail", cities "powered by the sun", and of course, "By '76, we'll be A-Ok".....

I only know this video because they showed it on Beavis and Butt-Head. The 2 idiots were rooting at the end because Donald and his ladyfriend went back to Don's crib.

Butt-Head: Yes!!! He's gonna score, huh huh huh!

Beavis: Yeah, heh heh heh!
NEW WAVE FOREVER: SLAVE TO THE WAVE FROM THE CRADLE TO THE GRAVE.

whaddya know, I was sitting with my friend in Burger King just an hour ago and they played that song. Not bad for a non-hit that came out 26 years ago.
