New CURE double album "13" and 4 new singles

I'm getting really excited as the news starts to roll in.

So far, it's looking like a double album to be released on September 13th.

And some really cool info about the singles has surfaced.

Apparently they will release 4 singles each on the 13th of the month leading up to the record's release, each with a b-side and a collector's edition housing all 4, somewhat like the Integration box set for the Disintegration singles.

The first single is "The Only One" backed with "NY Trip" and the 2nd to follow in June will be "Freakshow" with "All Kinds of Stuff" as the b-side.

And their tour starts this Friday! Wish there was a little more fanfare and that they were waiting until the new stuff is out.

Looks like some folks have already heard the new single and it's getting good reviews so far.

I like what Undercover had to say:

The Cure Screw Radio and Records, This Is How It Should Be Done
by Paul Cashmere - May 3 2008

The Cure have once again broken the 20th century mould that has frozen the radio and record industry. They will release a single a month, just like it should be.

The Cure will release four singles, complete with A side and B side, once a month on the 13th of every month, for the next four months leading up to the release of the next album.

The first single will be 'The Only One', backed by 'NY Trip' on May 13th.

On June 13th, prepare for 'Freakshow' with 'All Kinds of Stuff'.

On September 13th, The Cure will release their yet-to-be-titled 13th album (hence the 13th day of each release).

Innovative? Actually not. This is how it used to be done before radio research and record company marketing plans fucked themselves (and the industry) up.

The Beatles released 2 albums a year. The Stones did 2 albums a year before they got really big in the 70s and cut it back to one. We were all horrified when Pink Floyd went 3 years between albums once. Creedence Clearwater Revival did their three albums in 10 months.

But by the early 80s, radio no longer cared and record companies thought they still mattered. The result to this day is people with marketing degrees are creating music for people with no ears so that advertisers are happy.

What I love about this is that the radio industry and the major record labels are no loner set-up to handle this kind of activity with a fan base. Radio doesn't have the set-up time it so ridiculously thinks it needs to "research new music" and the major labels don't have the set-up time to "market to the passive music buyer".

In one swoop, The Cure has said fuck you to both sides and will do it themselves the right way.

The industry has lost its soul. The old school of 20th century radio and record people deserve their slow death.

There is a new breed that still care about the music and The Cure are ready to take sides with the 21st century thinkers and piss on the old school.

Good one Robert Smith and co. This is making music that matters.

It is great to see a band that knows how to reach and keep the interest of the core fan base. Congratulations to The Cure.

The first single sounds VERY poppy- perhaps even more than "End of the World". Kind of Wish-era pop.

If it wasn´t for Supa, I probably wouldn´t have bought a bit of their material,
so thanks Supa ! I will check this one out, though I´m not really a Cure fan but I have always liked a few of their songs and Supa opened my eyes. lol

Good news for Cure fans, but surely nothing strikes fear into the heart of a music fan quite a much as those two words together:

"DOUBLE" & "ALBUM"

eek eek
This is not an exit

Cool idea, but it would have been nice if the album release and tour were a little more in sync. Not having heard the album, I will be ill-prepared at the show next month.

So are these singles going to be released digitally or will only Euro fans have easy access to them, while US fans might have to pay about $13 for each "single". I look forward to the album, but I'm hardly a completist, so I doubt I will go for the singles if they are only physical. Very cool idea, though. Please the fans and fuck radio!

hey, thanks biggrin

yeah, i know... rolleyes

but anyway, i'm looking forward to this. it'll be my first Cure album since i actually kinda-sorta for-real got into them. i like the marketing approach: actually putting a good amount of stuff out there to generate some anticipation.

I actually like BloodFlowers a lot more than Wish, but I do like the Cure's poppy side as well.

The thing is, Wish isn't that poppy other than a few songs like the singles and Unstuck. It's a dark and heavy record.

The video for "The Only One" has been released!

It appears that the album will be a single album after all, unfortunately.

I love The Cure smile That is one band that didnt sell out and really that whole style was over exposed in the 1980s! cool They have really great beats - style - and their videos are the best ever made! They have a total artistic style to their videos with really no money behind them. That takes talent to have that artistic ability - the idea is more important then money being pushed to the for front.
