He's quite clued-up on Nietzsche though.

ok, I've listenned to this one 3 times front to back now, and I still don't care for it.
None of the songs sound 'finished', and a few of them sound like demos or sketches that never got fleshed out or massaged. It reminds me a lot of "With Teeth" combined with some of the spin off projects of Front-242's "UP EVIL" album during the 90's. It's not terrible by any stretch, but still just doesn't do it for me. It sounds too much like a garage band imitating Nine Inch Nails, if indeed that could ever be done . And I absolutely HATE Lights in The Sky...It's the equivalent of Prince's "Incense and Candles" type of song where after a few seconds you know exactly how the song is going to sound, feel, and that there will be a rap interlude that is positively eye-roll worthy. But I ain't gonna poo poo his album anymore--he's doing something really cool with the way he's releasing all this new music. But I'm going to asume this is sort of like a side project Trent is releasing to the masses. I love the fact that he's being so prolific now, and releasing music for free--folks who would have bought the album will definately want to see him in concert, so he's gonna get his cheese for sure. Keep 'em coming Trent! , [Edited 5/6/08 18:46pm]

I meant it in the sense that when you hear the first few seconds, you immediately know what the rest of the song is going to sound like. It's formulaic in spirit, if not intention.

It's minimalist in much the same vein as the original Videotape. It's a simple atmospheric ballad that evokes a somber mood. I think it's genius. This isn't a particularly great album, but it's solid NIN through and through. It's a fairly basic demonstration of Trent's ability to craft beats and overlay them with atmospheric background instrumentation and dark lyrics. It's a good album. [Edited 5/6/08 20:33pm] The world is a comedy for those who think and a tragedy for those who feel.

Yeah, I figured that was his intention. And I can see why some would like it. Moreover, I think he pulled off great stripped down tunes before (A warm place, etc.), but this doesn't do it for me. Dare I say it, I've heard minimalist Moby arrangements that moved me far more. I just listened to the tune again, and the only thing I can say is that it makes a great laxative.

Isn't it crazy how you can fall into a something like that listenin to stuff like this? I found myself in the same situation today driving.. it was a unique moment in that my mind had drifted out so far that when i returned it took me back.

Hi,
Listened yesterday. Love the drum programming on all the tracks. Some are very raw. Thought Echoplex and discipline are the standout tracks, with lights being pretty moody and cool. Again as Imago said supporting this type of release is very important, since we all know you know who said once they got "free" this would be how they released stuff. Trent understands today's market and can part with material without over producing it. Great job, Overall album I give a B, overall project execution A+ Music is the best...
