In stores today.

I love surprises like this. Just walkin through the store and *bam* an album I had no idea was even on the way clapping

you're kidding me, right?? They've been the talk of the month over here. They were also co-headliners (besides Prince) at Coachella this past weekend.....and that's pretty damn near to where you live, Richard! nod lol

I purchased this along with the new Madonna album- complete opposites, but still a great release day.
I like "Third", but I think I'm gonna have to be in the right head space to listen to it. The tracks from "The Rip" to "Machine Gun" are very strong and Beth sounds so sweet on "Deep Water"...and "Machine Gun" sounds great and brain splitting played really loud!

I was into "Dummy" but then completely forgot about them. I was actually surprised to find out that this is only their 3rd album. shrug

Anyway... I like it... it's pretty cool... but I think at this point, I'm finding it all just a little bit pretentious and dull. It's probably my mood. That could change, and it could be a grower, but for right now, I think I'd rather have a little more fun with my music.

I felt like that as well after the first hearing.....still, if you will give the album another chance at the right moment you'll find that it's pretty damn good!

i listened to it this morning a couple of times while i was doing some baking. it's good baking music. nice, mellow, a little weird. i like that the trip-hop element of their sound has matured into something less dated-sounding. "machine gun" is my favorite so far, it reminds me of soundtrack music for an 80s end-of-the-world action movie. i like it. maybe it's a little depressing, but i'm a bad judge of music being too much of a downer because i like that most of the time. shrug

i don't know if it can compete with their first album, but i like it a whole lot better than their second one (not that there's anything wrong with their second album - it just didn't stand out as much for me).

What's so embarrassing about a gay man buying an album by that other person? Isn't it forced upon your person as soon as you walk in the store?

Argh. There is no escaping her today--even on a Portishead thread. mad

it's been an irritating day today, and i blame madonna. mad

i couldn't even grab a copy at target without some fammy fam getting all up in my shit and bugging me. "do they have the special edition here? have you seen the special edition? what's in it???" HOW THE HELL SHOULD I KNOW, LEAVE ME ALONE. THERE'S POOP IN IT. FECES. NOW GO AWAY.

As if Target would have the special ed.

believe it or not, they do get special editions of quite a bit of new releases. at least at the target i go to in downtown mpls. they had the special edition of that rolling stones/scorsese soundtrack, and i've seen some other SEs offered there. shrug

I finally played the new album this weekend. It's fascinating to hear--a very cool sounding record definitely, but I wonder if because none of the songs really stand out that it won't get much repeat listens from me after a few months. That assessment could change after multiple spins.

I only had a chance to skim through it. I was hoping for a self-titled pt. 2.....but there aren't too many darker sounding beats from what I've heard. I've only heard "Machine Gun" in its entirety when they posted it on myspace.

I liked S/T a lot, but I'm happy the band didn't copy it. Some of the songs on Third are actually upbeat! omfg

After listening to it again, this will easily make my top five of the year.
