For a good idea of his classic early "Bossa Nova" sound (1965-69), check out these (especially "Fool On The Hill", IMO) : for a more Funk/Pop/Soul-fueled, mid-70's Brazilian trip, including collaborations with Louis Johnson, Michael Sembello, Dave Grusin and Stevie Wonder, try these: Home Cookin' , 76, and New Brazil, '77 For straight-up AOR early 80's Pop, try this one: Sergio Mendez (1983) for a Grammy-Winning return to his classic Brazil roots, but with an updated approach ( but no rapping, Lol), try this one: Sergio Mendes "Brasileiro" (1992) ... the earliest ones are pretty easy to find. I've had timeless since it came out, and I just got 'Encanto' thinking it might go back to an earlier sound...MORE will.i.am

I had to buy that after I saw the movie "Heavy Traffic" Yeah,I saw that movie for the first time,a few years ago Released in 1973,it's a trippy animated film.I'm not sure if I even "get" it,but it is entertaining, lol. This movie made me want to go out and find Sergio's song "Scarborough Fair".

My favorite stuff of his is Brazil '65 with Wanda De Sah on vocals. Every time I pull this out it stays in the car player for about a week. It's closer to acoustic jazz - guitar, bass, drums, piano & trumpet - than the Brazil '66 stuff that's most popular. Breezy, refreshing and perfect summer cool-out music.

[Edited 4/4/08 7:16am] Except for the last one, can you believe that I lucked on every one of these albums in 1993 at a thrift store off Interstate 95 in Broward County for 50 cents each ? At the time I knew very little of Mendes' work outside of some 70's albums my parents owned when I was small, and earlier collabs they had from him with Herb Albert. What I bought initially because I was intrigued by the styling on the '65, '66 albums covers, instantaneously became a musical love affair as soon as I put the needle to vinyl
