Big Pun before he gained weight I heard he used to be a model too. How did he gain so much weight? I tried to find some info on it but all I found was this old pic of him.

I remember this pic in a Vibe article when he first blew up. . . er. . . musically. If I remember correctly he said that he broke his leg or something and gained weight then. He was foine, though.

didn't he die trying to lose the weight?

Yeah, the obvious answer is a sedentary lifestyle and a high fat diet. But you never know. There are medical reasons for massive weight gain that have nothing to do with lack of exercise or bad eating habits.
Ironically, as I'm typing this I'm watching the Food Network and drooling over those fried clams and onion rings on Diners, Drive-in, and Dives. Why is all the good stuff so bad for ya?

I still have that issue of Vibe magazine somewhere. As far as I recall, he received quite a lot of money from somewhere ( I think insurance or something like that, maybe the lottery but I think it was insurance money) and when he got the money, he started eating too much.
He took part in some weight loss program at a university , some kind of research but died, unfortunately. " I´d rather be a stank ass hoe because I´m not stupid. Oh my goodness! I got more drugs! I´m always funny dude...I´m hilarious! Are we gonna smoke?"

Exactly. It also had to do with an accident or something and money he received from an insurance. I will try to look it up, I still have lots of old Vibe issues. What happened to that magazine, anyway ? Is it defunct ? " I´d rather be a stank ass hoe because I´m not stupid. Oh my goodness! I got more drugs! I´m always funny dude...I´m hilarious! Oh, thanks for the info.Thing is , I never see it on display these days, not even at airports ( you know, places where you can get almost any kind of magazine) , so I thought maybe they no longer publish it anymore. You are right, there was an obvious decline in style and quality after the late 90s. It used to be quite an interesting magazine, pretty mature and sometimes even political but since 1999 or 2000, it has become something of a teeny bopper magazine. I had a subscription for years then it went to shit. Here's what wikipedia says: Born in the South Bronx of Puerto Rican descent during the early years of hip-hop, Christopher Rios grew up enjoying basketball, boxing, and other sports. He met his wife Liza in the eighth grade. At the age of five, he broke his leg in a Manhattan municipal park, resulting in a lawsuit against the City of New York, later settled out of court. He received a lot of money in compensation. By all accounts from Pun's family, his early years were very difficult, including witnessing his mother's drug abuse, his father leaving the family, and a stepfather who was very hard on Pun. According to his grandmother, Pun would become angry and self-destructive, punching holes in the walls of his family's apartment and eating the chunks of drywall rocks . At the age of 17, Rios dropped out of Stevenson High School and for some time was homeless, staying in abandoned buildings or at friends' homes. Despite his athletic adolescence, Big Pun struggled with his weight for most of his life; his weight fluctuated in the early 90's between obese and morbidly obese. In the last years of his life he fluctuated between 450 and 697 pounds. Big Pun enrolled in a weight-loss program in North Carolina, in which he lost 100 pounds, but he eventually quit the program before completing it, returning to New York and gaining back the weight he had lost. On February 7, 2000, Big Pun suffered a fatal heart attack and respiratory failure in a hotel, Crowne Plaza, in White Plains, NY. Shit I was just in NYC this weekend, I shoulda slipped and fell in Central Park. [Edited 4/28/08 9:30am]

[Edited 4/28/08 9:30am] Okay, that´s probably more accurate than what I had posted...I didn´t have the article in reach. Anyway, he must have had a very troubled life, obviously, and a lot of troubled souls often become selfdestructive. May he rest in peace, I quite liked him. Sad story. I Remember an interview where he said he wanted to be around for his wife and kid (kids). he started working out and did too much and that happened. in his videos he was always sitting down because he was large. I think they used fat joe to compensate the visuals a lot of time in them too.
vibe, the source, etc I am surprised is are around. shoot music isn't still around really. nipsy

I heard some craziness about him having wanted to gain all of the weight..
He thought it would look good... Though, I don't really believe that. "..Just close your eyes and count to 10...and when U open 'em I'll B standing naked with nuthin' but a SMILE on.."
