LIVE MUSIC: When artists play two shows in one night See if anyone's got any opinions / stories about when bands play two shows in one night. Think this doesn't really happen too often, maybe just for jazz shows, although I'm sure I remember hearing that James Brown and the band used to play 5 or 6 (!) shows in the same day back in the 60's.
Will the best show usually be the late one? Would you ever pay to see both, one after the other? Basically Roy Ayers and his band are playing two shows in one evening at a local venue in Birmingham next week and I assume that I should get tickets for the later one, thinking that there is more chance we'll get a longer, more relaxed show etc. Or maybe it will just be the same vibe at both! What do you think?

What do you think? Ive done this 3 times and all 3 times i have gone to both shows. The first was DURAN DURAN at the Academy in NYC which is since closed, almost identical set lists with a few exceptions. The Second was last year at BB kings both times, once for The Bacon Brothers, execellent shows, a few songs changed in the later show. And the other Air Supply at BB kings, they actually played a totally different encore and extra one at the later show. "We went where our music was appreciated, and that was everywhere but the USA, we knew we had fans, but there is only so much of the world you can play at once" Magne F

Yes in the case of Roy...a night show will be the one where they worked out sound issues and got "Refreshments" during the intermission so..the late gig should be BANGIN !!!

I don't know if this counts but I went to all three Prince shows on 7/7/07. A few of the songs were the same, but he played songs at each show that he did not play that the others. Each show had its own energy and I was impressed by the level of intensity that P and the band played with at all three.
If the show is going to be in the same venue the second show might be the best bet. I have tickets for a Steve Harvey (comedian) in two weeks. Since the first show sold out they added a second show on the same night. Now I wish I had tickets for the second show because I have a feeling it will be better. But this is all speculation perfection is a fallacy of the imagination...

Well looks like I'm going to the late show for sure then!!
Will have to think about going to the early one as well, maybe that will just be too much funk!
