At this moment:
1. Van Morrison: the master! spiritual, deep, mesmerizing. 2. Lyle lovett: beautifull tone, and a real touch of tenderness and melancholy. 3. Teddy Thompson: clear, strong, pursuading. 4. Gavin Friday: almost campy, but with a lovely dark and sincere undercurrent 5. Joni Mitchell: especially when it comes to timing and phrasing. 6. Michael Stipe (REM): technically not a born talent, but the way he can use it is splendid. 7. Gary Louris (Jayhawks): pure, distinctive country-rock 'growl' 8. Björk: a love it or hate it voice, but in essence one of most the distinctive and strong vocal artists from the last 30 years 9. Nick Drake: timid, insecure, tender, but right on spot when combined with his music. 10.Susan McKeown:fragile sounding folk-singer, if only for her tremendous rendition of the traditional "Shamrock Green". Honorable mentions: Thé Lau: gravelled voiced singer from the dutch rockband "The Scene" David Hidalgo (Los lobos): earthly, wise, melancholic and tender at the same time. | |
