A lot of you mention Prince too! Prince is one hell of a singer. He may not be the best ever (vocally), but the man can send chills up and down ur spine (Insatiable or Do Me Baby anyone?). **--••--**--••**--••--**--••**--••--**--••**--••-

I'm actually shocked that the majority of mine are male. I would have bet that most of them would be female. That's how it's been for all of my music-loving life. I separate my vocalists from singer-entertainers who are also known for playing, so you won't find any Stevie or Aretha or Sarah on this list but, for the moment here are favorites of the top of my head in no order, I have spent years appreciating their vocal instruments and am pretty devoted in my adoration of them. I included links for some whomay be lesser known on the org:
1. Ella Fitzgerald 2. Anita O'Day http://www.youtube.com/wa...PO3XwLvjMl 3. Patti LaBelle 4. Elis Regina http://www.youtube.com/wa...3oNSFQVzNM 5. Janis Siegel (the' lil short one in Manhattan Transfer ) http://www.youtube.com/wa...cTsqRmx-ko 6. Jill Scott 7. Maria Rita http://www.youtube.com/wa...kx2qLISTU8 8. Minnie Ripperton 9. Beate Lecht (from Norwegian NuJazz group Beady Belle,in concert she's FIYAH) http://www.youtube.com/wa...-vRpM6C6al 10. Dianne Schuur (which is kinda cheatin, 'cause she plays, but LOVE HER ) http://youtube.com/watch?v=kU41QHnD_pE I still couldn't help including my favorite "Honorable Mentions" though. TEN choices just does not seem fair...! Etta James Kim Nazarian (from jazz vocalese quartet New York Voices) Amel Larrieux Garland Sade Steisand Erykah Badu Phoebe Snow (I know, I know- she plays, I cheat) Jaguar Wright Amy Winehouse Lizz Wright Nikka Costa Bessie Smith Shirley Caesar Maria Callas Tomoko Nagashima Gal Costa . If you venture out of my top 10, most of my faves are still female, but I must admit that lately, in my 30's, my taste is somewhat leaning to male voices, esp since I got back into Joy Division with full force. And The Cure. etc. It's never a fixture with me, though. | |
