Have you actually listened to the album? Or have you just decided it's awful because she's Jessica Simpson's sister and she's on a reality show? I can't stand Jessica Simpson, but Ashlee's first record had some good songs and intelligent lyrics. And I'm not the only one that feels that way. It got some good press reviews when it came out.
It depresses me how harsh people are on young women like Ashlee and Avril. They are a lot younger than artists like Madonna, Mariah and Janet and are still trying out different things to find themselves and what feels right.
How are you all to judge whether someone else is phony or not?[Edited 4/14/08 17:45pm]

lol Because I'm neither blind nor deaf. They were the ones selling these punk images and insisting how anti-pop they were, when really they only seemed to like the clothes and the attention they got from calling themselves 'punk'. I love punk attire too. I'll rock some Converse, baggy jeans, arm warmers, a wallet chain, and spiked hairdo with pride, but I'm not going to call myself 'punk' just because I like the punk image....that would be kinda misleading. nod
[Edited 4/14/08 18:37pm]

Guess what I"m not the only person who thinks some of Ashlee's songs are good. Her new cd got very postive reviews in the new issues of Rolling Stone, Entertainment Weekly, People and US. I guess all those magazines must know nothing about music.
When did she every say she was an authentic punk? She wanted to do rock on her first album and now she wants to do dance pop. So what?
I judge music on whether I like it and whether's it's catchy. Not based on some stupid idea of credibility and authenticity.

As far as Avril, she got a very postive review of her concert in the Washington Post. So guess what not everyone shares you view she is talentless and fake.

Okay, but in all seriousness, Rolling Stone hasn't been a decent music mag in decades, and EW, People and Us Weekly know fuck all about music. They are celeb trash rags. You may as well mention the National Enquirer's review. lol

Entertainment Weekly is not a tabloid. It's a news magazine that covers the entertainment business.
Of course, if all those magazines had said her record was awful, I'm sure you'd all love to point that out.

The comments about her remind me of what people first said about Madonna when she first started.
I like Ashlee's music and I have to perfect right to feel that way. If some of you could put aside your preconceived notions, you could see that. I'm not saying she's the greatest artist ever, but she does very well crafted pop songs.
But of course your minds are closed because she's Jessica's sister and because of the SNL thing.
I don't care about this whole authentic punk thing. It's stupid. Pop/punk music is very mainstream now. What's so alternative about "punk" anyway. It's just pop music with guitars.

You could say the same about People. Unfortunately they both look and read like Us Weekly now. So, to me, it's nothing but a tabloid.

Variety covers the entertainment *business*. EW covers celebrity drug additions and sex scandals.

Of course, if all those magazines had said her record was awful, I'm sure you'd all love to point that out.

Um, I really don't give a shit. All Music gave Paris Hilton's album ****1/2 stars and Rolling Stone gave Mick Jagger's solo album *****, so I guess those are masterpieces, too!

The comments about her remind me of what people first said about Madonna when she first started.

Yeah, it also reminds me of what people first said about Appolonia and Vanity.

I like Ashlee's music and I have to perfect right to feel that way. If some of you could put aside your preconceived notions, you could see that. I'm not saying she's the greatest artist ever, but she does very well crafted pop songs.

1. So you have taste but I have preconceived notions that are preventing me from liking Ashlee? Sorry, I'm confused lol

2. You act as if she crafted them herself! lol

But of course your minds are closed because she's Jessica's sister and because of the SNL thing.

Again, you have taste, but everyone else has closed minds? lol "Everyone else" merely thinks she's a completely untalented piece of shit, can't write or sing for shit, and has never released anything but shit. She's a complete joke in the industry, anyway.

What's so alternative about "punk" anyway. It's just pop music with guitars.

Errrr....since when did pop music not have guitars? eek confused

confused

First, off, why r you riding my ass about not liking this girl? Are you her mom/sister/cousin/bestfriend or something? You don't even know her. You only know what you see on TV and read in magazines, just like everybody else in this thread and what I see isn't someone I find to be anymore talented than the homeless guy singing for spare change on the corner. Just because you think she's God's gift to music doesn't mean I have to feel the same way. And sorry to say, but US Weekly IS a tabloid magazine. They pay paparazzo for all those photos just like Star, OK, and the National Enquirer does. Many of their articles are from unnamed "sources", not the celebrities PR person; and several of their stories have been proven to be inaccurate on more than one occasion.

Secondly, why should I care what some journalist has to say? Most journalists give their opinions on an album/person/thing and I'm giving mine. I don't need to listen to her album because I saw her SNL performance and I refuse to give any singer...and I mean ANY singer, my hard-earned money for them to put on a half-assed performance like that thing she did. I have lots of favorite artists who have disappointed me when I've noticed that they aren't singing live on a performance, so there's no favoritism to me. I'd ride Janet's, Mariah's, or Christina's ass if I ever paid to go to one of their concerts and they had the audacity to be standing in one spot and singing to a pre-recorded tape.

As much as they make, I know they can afford a good vocal coach who can teach them proper breathing techniques. Beyonce's dad used to make her sing while running as a way to teach her how to sing and dance at the same time. I don't even care if an artist is dancing...that ridiculous "it's hard to sing live and dance at the same time" excuse damn sure doesn't fly with me, because I've seen waaay too many other artists who do it and do it damn well. Plus, I don't really think Jessica is that much better of a singer than her, so the sister act thing doesn't matter to me...it's actually just as annoying as the "do you know who my father is" bullshit, which makes me ill.

When Madonna first started out, her own record labeled refused to put her picture on her first single and marketed her as a black female artist, so what's the point in comparing her to this chick? Madonna has more talent in her pinky toe than this girl has in her entire body with her new and original parts combined. Your opinion is your opinion and if you see a phenomenal artist that you feel is the best thing since sliced bread and indoor plumbing, more power to you for finding music that makes you smile, but to me, she's lucky that she has a famous sister who helped put her in the spotlight. I doubt she would have secured a record deal if Jessica hadn't been put out their first. Even her own father seems to put more emphasis on her sister than her.

This still makes me laugh:

Below is another reason why I don't like this girl, so you don't think it's just because of the SNL performance and her riding her big sis's coattails

disbelief Revolting and I would feel the same way about any non-celebrity who does shit like this. She's a twat and that's just MY twocents

She is?

This was her first video :

As far as I'm aware, Pink isn't still doing R&B.

Also lets not forget this gem :

I guess Ms Pink was singing to herself in the Stupid Girls song! rolleyes

Pink's as bad as the rest of em. Talent wise too.

As for Ashlee Simpson, never been a fan but I listened to her latest album last night and there are two VERY impressive songs on there :

Little Miss Obsessive :

Never Dream Alone (Just Ash and a piano) :

Whatever they did to her voice, they made it listenable.

I think the beginning of her career was handled terribly, with the punk image and that terrible haircut she had. The songs were ruined by her raspy voice, whereas her latest album seems to have finally found songs that SUIT her voice or are at least easy enough for her to sing.

I feel that when she was starting out the focus was still very much on Jessica, so everything was rushed or not thought over well enough.

As for the SNL incident, well, who knows what the truth is. It's weird how the band kept playing after she did her exit stage left.

Basically, I think she was just a young girl thrust WAY too soon into the limelight by a slightly insane stage dad.

I like her new look, I seriously want to find out the surgeon who worked on her nose, it looks fantastic. The blonde hair suits her as well.

I don't see why it's bad she went to blonde from "punk" considering she started out blonde anyway. The amount of teens I've seen go from blonde to black to blonde again is astounding - it's a fairly normal teen phase thing.

I also don't judge her music on her look wink
