Portishead - 'Third'

Yeah I know, Portishead's 'comeback'-album (first in 10 years!!!) 'Third' is not officially out until the end of this month.....the album is all over the net, I could not resist! confused

As expected, 'Third' is dark & mysterious. Beth Gibbons' voice almost sounds better than 10 years ago. Interesting is that there are less beats or samples, more room for 'real' instruments.
It's a hard album to digest, it will take a few listening-turns. Personally I miss a bit of the magic that was on 'Dummy' (1994!), still people who liked Portishead back then should listen to this one. Interesting would be to hear what younger people make of this album. Portishead broke through in 1994 with 'Dummy', together with fellow Wild Bunch-members Massive Attack & Tricky, all from Bristol.....They were labeled 'trip-hop', which was really a stupid label.
On 'Third', the 'hop' is mostly gone, what is left is the stunning voice af Beth Gibbons and the arrangements of the rest of the group.

I wonder how this album will be received.

Now
I was there when Dummy hit the waves and it was one of those few albums I couldn't stop playing. However none of my friends got it confused

Loved the second one too and preordered this one when I knew of it. But... I haven't nor will listen to it until I receive it.

PS. fishslap I remember how you answered the other day a fellow orger who suggested you might have illegally downloaded a still not released album

yeah, i've been listening to it for about a month now but i don't like
it as much as "portishead" which is my personal favorit album of them.

you're right about beth's vocals, they're superb. but they should not
be the only focal point to hang the songs on. it was brilliant when
her voice crooned together her solo album but for a portishead album
i had expected a bit more band involvement at the front of the songs
and a lot more mysterious scary shit.

right now it feels like my less fav album so far although it might be
a grower, i don't know.
and true love lives on lollipops and crisps

falloff that was all tongue in cheek! I still buy music, but sometimes I get tempted by releases that are on the net long before they're out officially.....I don't know whether I will buy this one though....will have to work on it first!

I think this is a very weak album, 10 years and 11 tracks!! and one of them is a ukulele song... lame.

I think they've got a bit to up themselves on this one.

I was hoping for something epic, or even something with a bit of the groove that dummy was synonymous for.... but it seems like a bit of a void to me.

You wanted another 'Dummy'? I love how they butched up a bit. I think the album is choppy, but not in a bad way. They wanted to break away from the trip-hop label without giving up on their own sound. I think it worked remarkably well.
