I mean to say that I as a consumer really have no choice and only "think" I'm in control can be a theory, as well as being brain-washed by radio and them controlling what I like.

I actually believe there's truth to it, just how there could be some truth to what she's saying. Her point was that gangsta rap, and the mentality that it brought about, was of the same marketing (you speak of) to create more violence within our communities and against eachother, which could very well be true. My overall point is that we can't be so judgmental of her or think her theories are so far-fetched, especially not when we have some of our own. I think Tupac was influential and had millions of listeners and followers. I'm not 100% sold on the idea that the govt. had him or biggie murdered either, but it's not all that "out there" to believe.
[Edited 4/14/08 18:28pm]

If I believed every hair-brained conspiracy theorist, I'd be walking around in a bulletproof vest 24/7 and tin foil on my head. At some point, facts have to enter the equation. I'm not gullible enough to fall for any ol' theory without motive or facts to support it. Tupac had millions of LISTENERS. Followers are people who would dedicate their life to the cause of a person. I do not believe Tupac had millions of "followers". Again, there's a huge difference between being willing to stand in line for concert tickets and being willing to stand on a front line for someone. A plot for the government to kill Farrakhan, I can see. That has facts and motive. Tupac or Biggie? No.
[Edited 4/14/08 19:11pm]

That's fair, I now understand what your saying. I appreciate your thoughts now much more than I did at the beginning of the thread. Maybe Alicia will support her beliefs with some kind of facts, maybe she won't. We'll see,.

I honestly think only an east-coast person, like herself, would think gangsta rap is a government conspiracy. It's typical for New Yorkers to think their brand of rap is the best

He mkes no more sense than Alicia. There is no evidence and no motive presented other than they "could" have tried to organize but the problem is that ADULTS with education would not subscribe to any sort of resistance movement headed by Tupac or Biggie. An entertainer trying to be a hoodlum and a hoodlum trying to be an entertainer just aren't going to be able to convince mature adults to follow them. Sure, they can get into the heads of 15-19 year olds and gullible people like Alicia but come on. Chuck D was more of a threat to the government than Pac ever could be. Chuck was spittin' knowledge about the government left and right AND spitting solutions, which is something neither Big nor Pac specialized in. Sorry, mna. No matter how you put it, the motive is not strong enough. That was some drug family shit and that's why it goes unsolved to this day. The Feds probably want to indict someone high up on the list with enough charges to bring the cartel down and those murders, though very high profile, couldn't be made to stick to who they need it to.
Te Feds never interfered with the local investigation of the murders. Its NOT federal; if anything, its local.

Alicia Keys Clarifies Conspiracy Remarks

April 15
Article

Alicia Keys is clearing the air on her statements that gangster rap was a government "ploy to convince black people to kill each other" and that the government and media were responsible for the drama between slain rappers Tupac and the Notorious B.I.G.

Keys, 27, told Ryan Seacrest's KIIS-FM show Tuesday she was "misinterpreted" and clarified her remarks to Blender magazine.

"The term 'gangsa rap' was so over-sloganized during that time," she said, "and in so many ways everyday people as well as the government could have really done so much more to obliterate and eradicate the things that were going on in the community at that time that forced the artists to discuss and talk so strongly what they saw- what they lived with every day."

Keys also addressed her theory the rappers' deadly feud was fueled "by the government and the media to stop another great black leader from existing."

"It was just an over-sensationalized situation," she told Seacrest. "We don't know who killed Biggie and Pac. But I do feel like had more communication been done between the two men, that result would have not happened."

Calling the situation "disappointing," Keys added, "All the things that I try to do to inspire people and it rarely gets nearly this much attention."

But Keys isn't holding a grudge. Aside from the few lines that "provoked all of this madness" Keys thought the interview was great. "The only thing I regret is a negative spin has been put on something that wasn't my intention."

HA! HA! Spin time!
Clive got in that ass! I bet the conversation went something like this:
Clive:[/b] Ah, Miss keys. Glad you could join me today. Let me ask you something. Do you like bananas?
Alicia: Uh...yeah, I guess so
Clive: How'd you like to eat bananas all of the time?
Alicia: Uh...well, I like other foods
Clive: Well you know what? I like other foods, too. The problem is that when you go and talk to an interviewer like they are those silly little girls you run around with, you cut off our food supply.
Alicia: Oh, That. Well, I was just sayin'....
Clive: BITCH I DON'T PAY YOU TO SAY, I PAY YOU TO SING...and flaunt your ass around on the stage. Look cute, sing and play. That's all I ask. The problem is when you run your fucking mouth about bullshit that nobody gives a damn about anymore to the press and come off sounding like Farrakhan's little mistress, you fuck with our food money!
Alicia: But I was just....
Clive: You were just What? Trying to fuck up everything I've built for your ass? Don't know know who I am? I'm Clive Davis, bitch!
Starmaker. And on more than a few occasions - starbreaker.
Alicia: But they had asked me....
Clive: (snatches Alicia by the hair) I don't give a damn if they as your high yellow ass if two plus two is four, you don't say nothing without running it by me first!
Alicia: I'm sorry! I'm sorry!
Clive: You're damn right you're sorry! You know what I've had to do to get you where you are? Do you know the things I've had to cover up about you! I made you look like a damn Disney character and this is how you repay me? Do you think that shit was free? Do you really think you got nine grammys on your own? A new bitch to the game?
Alicia: Please let my hair go.
Clive: I'll do more than let your hair go. I'll let YOU go. I'll snatch the rug right out from under your ass and you can crawl back to Harlem and sing on the gad-damned street corners. Is that what you want?
Alicia: No.
Clive: You like bananas? Because when I'm done with you, no one would even so much as sell you a sandwich in this town or any other one. The only thing anyone will let you eat is bananas! Do you understand me?
Alicia: Yes, Mr. Davis. Look, I can fix this.
Clive: (let's go of Alicia's hair) You're damn right you'll fix it. Now I've set up an interview with that gay guy that hosts American Idol...
Alicia: Ryan Seacrest?
Clive: Yeah, that guy. What you're gonna do is talk to him and smooth this whole thing over. Make it seem like you were misquoted. Then you're gonna stop talking to these so-called urban revolutionaries and spewing conspiracy bullshit so you don't end up looking as crazy as Whitney. Then, you're gonna do a duet with a rock group. Yes, you heard me. Show the public a bit of your white side. In a few months, this shit will blow over and most people will have forgotten. You WILL do this. I don't ever want to hear the words Tupac, Biggie or conspiracy come out of your mouth again or so help me, its bananas for your ass. Are we clear?
Alicia: Yes, sir. We're clear.

Alicia: Huh?

Alicia forgot about Iceburg Slim; how he was the idea behind early gangsta rap. Schooley D was the first, then you had Ice-T and NWA admitting that they "started the shit."

I actually don't think she's an idiot at all. I'm not even really interested in her music vs. the community service she does on a global scale. One thing I do agree with in the conversation posted with Seacrest is that not alot of attention is paid to her community work, I guess articles about government conspiracies and rap wars garner more attention than the hospitals she's building in Africa to help combat the AIDS pandemic. hrmph. I'd be lying though if I didn't admit that I'm pissed with the way the US media has just evolved every single "newsworthy" piece from a soundbite these days. It's far too easy for what people say to be taken out of context and twisted every which way for attracting audience interest, and it always begins with news reports and interviews offering only a fraction of the full story and then putting a sensational spin on it.

Alicia is such a confusion. You cant really tell if shes:

smart or dumb
gay or straight
really talented or not really talented

Just when I think she's onto something and I'm ready to hear facts, she tries to clear it in a way that don't come off so well to me. It almost sounds like she didn't have a clue of what she was talking about initially. confused

Enigma is what I say. I'm really hoping she satisfies her contract with her label and moves on to another because I just don't see this working for much longer the way it is. However, as long as Clive is still ticking he'll continue to spend tremendous amounts of money on her promotion. I have never seen the level of promotion she gets with any other artist. I believe the promotion is what gets the album sales. I also thinks she thinks she's smarter than she really is or she just isn't good at expressing herself clearly. Can't figure it out

What do you mean by that? It seems as though they have a pretty good relationship.

Alicia is promoted heavily but she also works hard and seems to know how to build relationships, which also in turn have people like radio stations and etc. working for her. Who wouldn't want Alicia in their magazine, or on their radio station?

I was talking about her content of work, not their relationship

I have no doubt she knows how to me diplomatic, personable, and kiss the right asses. I believe her likeability has to do specifically with how she is promoted as well as her physical appearance. Most of us all know of an artist that we feel should be promoted more because they would take the world by storm, but lack of promotion has them fall through the cracks. I honestly don't think Alicia is worthy of such heavy promotion. Neither is Leona Lewis

I got ya.

It's hard to say if Alicia should be promoted the way she is or not. I don't think she deserves all the accolades, but the talent(piano, writing, singing), her humanitarian work, her personality and positivity, and her overall versatility as a musical artist makes her pretty interesting.

Now Leona Lewis is just boring with an okay voice. I mean, she could become a lot more, but I instantly felt something with Alicia and both times(watching her on Teen Summit, and hearing Fallin). It's hard to say, but I do know that the feeling is wearing off because she's not doing what I think she's capable of.

I think right now Alicia is better at being a humanitarian for her one charity (I know there are others, but KCA is the one she almost only talks about). I don't know the woman, but I find it hard to believe she's that diplomatic behind closed doors

As for Leona Lewis being boring, well, When I heard Alicia's first single "Girlfriend" I thought it was boring and never cared to know what her name was. I though Fallin' was great, but I also thought it was the only great song on the album and the rest was lackluster. The other albums have followed suit: Too slow, mellow and boring. If she could deliver the passion and excitement in her other music as she did in Fallin' and If I Ain't Got You, I'd be a fan

I was just listening to the No One remix with Damien Marley, and I came to the conclusion that the Bridge of No One has to be the best bridge of a song in years..she literally showed a bit of genius on it. Alicia deserves all of her promotion and atleast half of her praise. cool

Clive? confused

I snapped back into myself. Alicia is the greatest!

I was just listening to the No One remix with Damien Marley, and I came to the conclusion that the Bridge of No One has to be the best bridge of a song in years..she literally showed a bit of genius on it. Alicia deserves all of her promotion and atleast half of her praise. cool

Do you have Dissociative Identity Disorder?

This man makes perfect sense. This is along the lines of what I was saying, but he really has a point.

I am so happy to read that the person who wrote this article seems to think he has every single white person and their motives all figured out. An excellent, stereotyping article of an entire race, I must say. I'm sorry, but the guy just comes off as ignorant. There is nothing wrong in him believing that there could have been some kind of conspiracy. Its certainly his right to have his own opinion on the subject. But the amount of stereotyping he projects onto how all whites, according to him, think and behave is completely unfounded.
