Again, it's apples to oranges. I see the Beatles and Stones as being more timeless whereas the Bee Gees sound is representative more of a particular era in music and at least for me, it never seems to rise above that. They made great music, but not timeless music.

The Beatles and Stones WISH they made timeless music. lol

When poor Paul did the Superbowl parents had to do a lot of explaining.

I can't really say the Bee Gees were better song writers than the Stones or Beatles.

I am partial to The Rolling Stones (60's-70's works) because they were there from the start of the British invasion to the psychadelic late 60's. They then did some experiments with reggae and disco, which was a unique change to their sound in the 70's. After that, they sucked ass...

The Beatles were great and they accomplished more in the 6 or so years than most bands did in a lifetime.

Yes the Bee Gees wrote great tunes in the 70's and songs for other artists in the 1980's, but I would be hard pressed to name 5 good albums by these guys.

As with all art, it is subjective, but to echo a comment made earlier, I would throw Queen in the mix as well. Freddie Mercury was a great showman and a talented songwriter too (Bohemian Rhapsody, Somebody to Love, Crazy Little Thing), but John Deacon (Another One Bites the Dust) Roger Taylor (I'm in love with my car) and Brian May (Tie your mother down) all had great contributions to most Queen albums and they could do glam rock (Bohemian Rhapsody), disco (Another One Bites the Dust) Speed metal (Stone Cold crazy) and various styles.

Well these people disagree with you:

"Barry Gibb is an amazing writer and it was a thrill to have him write a song for me."

-Leo Sayer

"I wish I had written a song like 'To Love Somebody'
-Noel Gallagher

"In terms of bands, there are five extraordinary catalogues that make me ill with envy. It doesn't have to be said the Bee Gees are up there with the Beatles"

-Bono

"I rate the Brothers Gibb as one of the greatest songwriting combinations of the 20th century".

-Tim Rice

"Great songwriters. I love their music"
-Alice Cooper

"Barry Gibb is one hell of a record maker. And by God, he has written some damn fine songs"
-Stephen Stills

I think that says it all! razz lol

Well whether or not you think their albums have a lot of filler (which I disagree with) It doesn't have much to do with their songwriting abilities as they've written many great songs for other artists.

99% of the music that I like sounds like the era it was recorded in. I don't like timeless music because that means it would fit in with the 1990s and today's music, which is absolutely horrible. Give me "dated" music any day. lol

Oh, he pissed me off beginning in 1985 when he started making music that sounded like the 1960s and 1970s while the 1980s were still going on. It took shit hop taking over to make me appreciate Prince's post "Purple Rain" work. When it comes to Prince though, my favorite is the "Old Prince"...1978-1984...which was Prince making the hardest and strongest music possible that actually sounded like the era it was recorded in rather than taking a retro trip. Those years will always be the real Prince to me. The Prince after 1985 isn't even the same person, unfortunately.

They were certainly better songwriters than the Stones, but not the Beatles.

The Stones (Jagger/Richards) were not even in the same category than Lennon/Mc Cartney

Totally disagree. They were very innovative during that same era, thanks mostly to the talents of Brian Jones. Just try to compare the effect of the sitar on 'Paint It Black' to the one on 'Norwegian Wood'. I also think that 'Ruby Tuesday', though not one of my favorite Stones songs, is a better ballad musically(brian jones on recorder) than 'Yesterday' is.

The Bee Gees were a fantastic group and they were stunning vocalists. They did not have the diversity or innovation of the The Stones and The Beatles though.

There are 3 Bee Gees songs that are pretty much unkown, but absolutely EXCELLENT! They are:

'BODYGUARD' from the album 'ONE'.

'HAPPY EVER AFTER' from the album 'HIGH CIVILIZATION'.

'HAUNTED HOUSE' from the album 'SIZE ISN'T EVERYTHING'.

Check out these three songs if you can and give them a listen. They are BEAUTIFUL love songs!

Is there something wrong with that? I mean does listening to mainstream pop on occasion automatically equate with not liking rock music? Just curious.

It's funny. Prince is aboutthe ONLY reason I listen 2 rock at all.
A little Mint Condition, Living Colour, Isley brothers and P-funk. That's it.

I'm a fan of the Bee Gees, but I can't say they were better songwriters than the Beatles or Stones. I enjoy the music of the Stones the most with the Beatles in close second. The brothers Gibb were great songwriters too, no doubt about that.
