Mayte is taking so long to get her album out. She should have been right there ready to go when the Latin craze first hit a couple years ago.
No matter what Mayte does now, she's going to be seen as a copycat latecomer. If she goes the R&B route, she'll be seen as copying J-Lo. If she does belly dancing, she'll be seen as copying Shakira. If she goes for the sexy image, she'll be seen as copying Christina Aguilera. It's never been made clear why Mayte didn't get a manager who could help guide her career after her divorce from Prince.

Come On I like salsa/ latin jazz and those are fake "latin artists",the exception is Gloria Estefan I think, too bad she has chosen the facility
Their "music" suck, it has no soul [This message was edited Sun Oct 27 22:03:09 PST 2002 by jnoel]

I am really offended by this thread!! I have always loved Latin music and I appreciate the talents of people like Marc Anthony,Carlos Santana and Gloria Estefan. And why does it matter if Ricky Martin is "gay"? Latin music is,for the most part, highly creative, intoxicating and very "musical" (unlike most of today's pop crap).

In all the names mentioned i will make an exception for Gloria Estefan. For obvious reasons.
For the rest there is nothing latin about those others. Or it must be their names sound latin and they can speak (or not) Spanish. It is highly commercial and for that reason called latin. Did you let yourselves be fooled. Look in your local cd/record store for the section 'worldmusic' and get yourself some real latin music. Compare those latin artists with food. If you have a somewhat more develloped taste ,you don't go for the fastfood.

If you have a somewhat more develloped taste ,you don't go for the fastfood. What you have to understand is that many of those artists release both English/pop CDs,as well as "real" Latin music CDs with Spanish lyrics. For example, last year Marc Anthony released an excellent salsa album called 'Libre'.But in America,he's more known for his pop/crossover songs like "I Need To Know" and "You Sang To Me".I saw him in concert several months ago,and it seems that the crowd were more impressed with his salsa songs than the pop stuff. Most of those other artists also release more authentic-sounding Latin albums, but you won't hear it on the radio or see it on MTV. Sorry, can't totally chime in and agree on this one. Shakira is the BOMB! I'm not even into rock that much, but I like her.
Secada: Think he must have gotten a raw deal somewhere along the way. I went to a concert of his quite a while back and the man can SANG! His recordings don't do him justice AT ALL, nor do the songs he sings. He should fire folks and hook up with someone else. The others mentioned I can take or leave. Who SHOULD be gettin' props: The Orishas! Their CD A Lo Cubano is the best rap CD I've heard in a looong time. Because it's in Spanish, they don't get US airplay at all. Shame, because they blow all the other rap acts out of the water! The finger pointing at the moon is not the moon...dammit!

I agree with your comments about Jon Secada. He is truly underrated and deserves much more success than he's gotten so far.I think he needs a more agressive manager and a new record label that knows how to market and promote him.
Ozomatli is one band that deserves more recognition too.I saw them in concert a few weeks ago (as Santana's opening act) and these guys are FIERCE!! They also appear on Santana's new CD,on the track "One Of These Days".It's the best uptempo song on the album, imo.

I not have enough latinos! J-Lo has the big ass!
Prince say "Turn big ass round my way and I'll work on that nipper!" and I think that of her. Fat Joe with Ashantu is big ass latina too but I don't think like it same as J-Lo. My name is Tibor and I am funky!

AGREE. Doesn't make a difference either. hel* yeah we've had enough of the few so many 'uncategorized' others... [This message was edited Wed Oct 30 20:53:12 PST 2002 by Starmist7]

Ok,Ricky Martin truly does suck, but Marc Anthony is GREAT!!! That guy can really sing and he doesn't neglect his Puerto Rican/salsa roots either.Last year,he released a kickass salsa album 'Libre',and his recent concerts consist mostly of salsa numbers. He's the real deal,y'all!!
And the latest Santana CD contains more Latin tracks and less "pop" tracks.Songs like "Adouma","Foo Foo","Amore (Sexo)","Aye Aye Aye","Hoy Es Adios" and "One Of These Days" should satisfy ANYONE who appreciates good Latin music. You should be proud to be represented by great artists like that!
