Most underrated James Brown track: I Guess I'll Have to Cry, Cry, Cry I just recently received JAMES BROWN the Singles Volume 5: 1967-1969 and one of the tracks is a cut titled "I Guess I'll Have to Cry, Cry, Cry" well this track is amazing. Up until yesterday, I had never heard the complete track so I was blown away when I heard it.
First, it was released around the summer on 1968 (around the time he was releasing FUNK classics) well this is a straight up ballad. It charted decently at 55 Pop and #15 Black but it's better then it's chart appearance. The reason me and others probably never really heard the track 'cause it' never really included on compilations. It's not on Star Time!, 50th or 40th Anniversary Collections or other major JB CDs. http://youtube.com/watch?v=z2yJPsRTXYM PLEASE DON'T EVEN WATCH THE VIDEO, JUST LISTEN TO THE TRACK, YOU'VE BEEN WARNED ... I love this one. "Half of what I say is meaningless; but I say it so that the other half may reach you." - Kahlil Gibran | |

By the late 60s, JB was known for his funk jams, but he started his career as a ballader and most of his early hits from the '50s and early '60s are ballads. This is (IMO) one of his best ballads.
The horns, the strings, violins, the piano triplets and the drumming. It just fits so well together. His vocals and wordplay are top notch also. JB and Sam Lowe did there 'thang. PRINCE: Always and Forever
