The new Moby album, "Last Night" I can't believe I'm actually saying this, but I like Moby again. Like just about everyone else, I got burned out on "Play", and didn't much care about anything he did after that, mainly because it sounded like he was spinning his wheels and working out a new set of licenseable plainchants for potential television commercials and film soundtracks. Soooo, this new one, "Last Night", was pretty much a non-entity to me when I first heard it was coming out. Moby. Who cares? Then I heard "Alice" on the radio a few weeks ago. Didn't know who it was at first, but it was pretty catchy. Afterwards, the DJ said it was some new stuff by Moby. Huh. Not bad. This happened a couple more times, with a couple of other tracks from the new album. Uh-oh. I was starting to appreciate multiple tracks from the new Moby. Shit. So sure, why not, I bought the damn thing at Target over the weekend and I've given it a couple of spins. What can I tell you, I like it. It has the sound of his first couple of albums, which I gather is an intentional choice (after all, there IS a song on the album called "Everyday It's 1989"). We're at a time when early '90s dance music is passing the threshhold from "dated" to "retro", and this Moby album seems to be panting anxiously at the gate, waiting for a full-on glowstick revival. And hey - it works. It's fun. It's Moby, but it's not TOO Moby and it's not phoned-in corpo-Moby like his past couple of albums seem to have been. Sure, we'll hear the new shit in upcoming Mountain Dew commercials, but whatever. Enjoy it before it becomes too ubiquitous - which with the substance of this album, should take a bit longer to wear out than usual. | |

You know, honestly, aside from South Side, I can't even remember any song by Moby ever. My only real association to his name is the fond memory of having sex on the lawn when he played the Area 2 show in Chicago.
