Duffy - Mercy

Let me know if I'm really behind the times here but my local radio station just started playing this song this week and I can't get it out of my mind. Does anyone know about Duffy? Does all her music have this same vibe? I know the comparisions with Wino are probably abundant but she's got a different twist.
Enlighten me please, I'm intrigued...

My review of Duffy's NY show earlier this month:

March 17th: DUFFY at Hiro Ballroom - Having the number one song in England at the time, Welsh singer Aimee Duffy came to New York's Hiro Ballroom for her first "real" performance. (I'm quoting her there. I have no idea if she perhaps did one song or two previously stateside.) Dressed in a strapless black dress, she wished us all a Happy St. Patrick's Day and said how much she liked being in New York. She apologized for her album not being out yet and promised to walk us through the setlist. Despite that, I would think in this age of internet leaks, many of the people in attendance have heard the album already. One fan near the front of the stage admitted this to which Duffy joked that she would have to discuss afterward how he acquired a bootleg album. The small stage looked cramped with Duffy's band of six musicians: Two guitarists, a bassist, keyboardist, drummer and percussionist. They all played Duffy's style of retro soul very well with some of them providing backing vocals to her excellent lead. Indeed, her voice is well-suited for 60s style soul music and she's often been compared to the late Dusty Springfield. She was very humble throughout the night despite asking a man in the front to open her water bottle for her after which she descibed herself as being a diva for making such a request. The cheers for hearing her sing were continuous and she had some fun with this teasing the audience with long pauses during the guitar-only "Syrup & Honey". She can only get bigger once her album finally is released here later this spring. Once that happens, her days at small venues like Hiro Ballroom will surely be left way behind.

Setlist:

Rockferry
Warwick Avenue
Hanging On Too Long
Serious
Breaking My Own Heart
Syrup & Honey
Stepping Stone
Delayed Devotion
Tomorrow
Mercy

Encore:
Distant Dreamer

50 minutes

All I have so far is the "Mercy" single, but I like the B-sides a lot!

It's fantastic! The video for "Mercy" completely sealed the deal for me. Look at the last link sextonseven listed.

Mercy is just a bad rip off of Chain of fools. Diluted and nicely packaged for the souless mass consumer.

She is dreadful. Why can't people see through shit like this? The album is merely an exercise in pastiche bordering on plagarism - "Warwick Avenue", anyone? Oasis were never as blatant as this - I couldn't believe it. Add to this her braying sheep tone and all her stupid stage mannerisms that she's been told to do (I know this for a fact)...it's more superficial and has less credibility than Vanilla Ice. But hey, the masses eat it up through the power of suggestion...

No, I'm not. It's awful derivative material with NO soul. It's a project that's had a shit load of marketing money put into it - anything will sell if the label wish to put aside a large amount for marketing/promotion/press. Most people are bloody sheep.

Then bah, bah, fucking bah, because I'm eating it up quite happily.

I managed to listen to it a total of 3 times tonight already on my way to and from what it is I went to do, and I have to say.... I LOVE IT! It's totally the Dusty Springfield/Petula Clark answer to Amy Winehouse's Motown sounds of last year. I like this trend. Can we get MORE British chicks to do homages to 60's r&b?

I don't really care if it's derivative and a pastiche and an homage or a rip-off. So what? Considering what's out there today, it's a nice throwback to when music actually sounded good. So maybe it's not fresh in that context, but this type of music has a certain freshness to it, whether it was made in 1968 or 2008, that you don't get from the soulless crunk and r&b and "hip hop" of today.

But...

Ian... what I can't understand is why YOU love it so much, considering how much you hate music from the 60's, especially THIS kind of music from the 60's. biggrin I'm glad you like it, and maybe it will open up some avenues for you to that era.

No, it's all the mindless UK execs copying a copycat (Back To Black). There are so many Amy-a-likes in the UK at the moment, it's a joke.

Fair play if you like "Mercy", but I don't know how insubstantial could be at No. 1 for so many weeks. Give me Crazy Frog any day.

Ah, okay, thanks. I've got enough other music to blow my $ on this week anyway.

It has no chorus and just goes on and on and on in the same boring way all the way through.

A definite example of a good performance being let down by a poor song.

This song is immediately gripping, and I really think it will go down as a soul classic.

Na it won't ..Sorry not one to slag off UK music but there is a bit of hype around Duffy not to say she not up their with Adele, Amy, Joss, etc.. but i think Amy (if she can stay off the drugs) is the real deal! Back to Black is a soild CD and she has something about her..that will last..sory Duffy!

Kind of agree, here. It's brilliantly produced, and she sounds good, but the melody is lacking (which is what I've always felt about Amy, but this is even worse)

I'll have to disagree about Joss Stone. I don't see the appeal in her at all. Amy is better, true. There is no buzz here in the states about Adele.

I'm just gonna go ahead and call it what it is - the 60s all over again. Pat Boone. Its old school black music without the black people and without soul. On concept alone, I would never support this mess. Its not aimed at me anyway. rolleyes
Labels are trying to bring the 60s back with songs like this and "Do The 45".
I'LL PASS.
