Those are the type of songs that slowed R&B down, ruined it, took all rhythm and ass shake appeal out, and opened the door for the slow dull 1990s and today. That's debatable. There's certainly nothing wrong with slowing down r&b for a lovesong or ballad. That's always been a hallmark of the genre; going way back into 50s and 60s. I somewhat agree that the sound was too pop crossover at time and I really don't play that stuff much nowadays. Still, I kept the records and don't mind too much when they get played As per what ruined things in the 80s (besides hiphop). THat goes to those horrifying gay and stiff Eurotrash from Culture Club, Pet Shop Boys, Fine Young Cannibals ABC and other fake soul crap. That migh be mid80s, but I DESPISE THAT SHIT MORE THAN HIP_HOP. The groups I listed made slow jams also but they were good slow jams, the bedroom type. None of that dull adult contemporary type stuff that peoples' parents could get into. They also made fast jams too, something that the artists in the original post made very little of, if any. Music should be made for either the dick or the ass. Bedroom jams for the dick and dance floor jams for the ass. If a song doesn't fit either of these purposes, it serves no purpose and shouldn't be made. Andy is a four letter word.

The only person missing was Freddie Jackson and I think all the artists that I can't stand would have been listed. . . . [Edited 3/28/08 8:53am] I have to admit I agree with you. Aside from Peabo and Stephanie Mills, I wasn't feeling much of them at all. The 80's is so much more exciting than those ballads, and though I love ballads and appreciate them, the music was produced in such a way that the melodies were second priority and I couldn't sing along to them. That's not to say I'm shunning 80's r&b completely, I could sing along to Muscles, Between the Sheets, and many others, but I wasn't feeling much of these. Even your girl Shitney moves me more, and she doesn't always have emotion although she inspires me vocally on a technical level only. I liked them alot. Then I remember going to really great concerts as a young teen in the early 80's like Midnight Starr, Atlantic Starr, ect. They were excellent groups....I'm stll thinking of who else I liked...my memory is a little off today . But I remember music being such a huge part of home and school life, there really are a lot of groups that take me straight back to happy times being age 12 or 14 or so

I agree, things went downhill after 1985.By then, rap was taking over, soon to be followed by New Jack Swing That's why I prefer early 80s R&B. Adult contemporary is what was taking over. There were a few artists jamming in the late 1980s like Ready For The World, The Jets, Jesse Johnson, Jody Watley, Trinere, The Bronner Brothers, etc. However, the adult contempary shit like Shitney Houston, Anita Baker, Freddie Jackson, Mikki Howard, Regina Belle, etc. was getting far more airplay and things were becoming extremely dull. As for the rap of the 1980s, actually, a lot of it was faster than the scarce funk at the time. There were folks like The Egyptian Lover, LA Dream Team, Gigolo Tony, 2 Live Crew, Afro Rican, Freestyle, etc. who were shaking the asses just as hard as the funk acts during that time and getting airplay on mainstream R&B stations. Unfortunately, there was a much slower tempo much duller rap brewing underground. I remember the only Salt and Pepa song played on our local mainstream R&B stations at the time was "Push It" and I can see why. Everything else didn't really sound good enough to be played alongside and fit in with the funk at the time except for "Push It". There were a ton of rap groups that were underground in the late 1980s that I used to hear on one of our stations that played a mix on Saturday afternoons which was 30 minutes of rap and 30 minutes of house music (which was underground also). I would tune in for the house and fast rap. However, sometimes they would get stuck on that boring ass slow rap and wouldn't get off it. The shit hop that took over in the 1990s sounded like that underground rap of the late 1980s....the type that was too slow and dull to fit in with the funk on the mainstream R&B stations. . . . I mean, if you're going that route how can you overlook Luther Vandross?
