This isn't American Idols doing, is it? Because I'd have to find out where you live and u if the only reason you started liking the Beatles was fucking American Idol. If not, disregard that and just take my congratulations on deciding to embark on an incredible musical journey.

But seriously they have soooo many great songs it's not even funny, you can't go wrong. I love their early singles She Loves You, Can't Buy Me Love, Help, Ticket to Ride, Twist and Shout and so on but their later albums are generally given more praise.

The "Blue" album would probably be best place to start since you sited "Across the Universe" and "Hey Jude", both later-day songs.

A Day In The Life is their Purple Rain, or Prince's A Day In The Life...lol

Both the best of CD's and the Past Masters albums are both great.

Past Masters is good beause alot of their greatest hits were only issued on 7" singles and never issued on regular albums; Past Masters collects those and the b-sides and alternate versions. COol compilations.

If you want to go for the albums, please pay in mind that they used to do alot of straight up rock and roll and early rhythm and blues songs, so they are all over their earlier albums.

But if you like Hey Jude and Across The Universe, then indeed, a good tip would be to pick up their albums from Rubber Soul.

Rubber Soul (65), Revolver (66), Sgt Pepper's (67), The Beatles (68)(better know as The White Album), Abbey Road (69)and Let It Be (70). If you're going for this path; I would suggest you start with the first, then work your way up to understand the musical progression they went through.

And remember that even though Let It be was released later, it was recorded BEFORE Abbey Road, making Abbey Road the last actual compilation of new Beatles recordings.

Oh, and PS;

Across The Universe is a song that was produced by Phil Spector, who embelished it with his production; he put on backing vocals etc.

There is an Anthology series (three double albums) that contain a lot of never released songs and alternate takes, specials recordings, live recordings etc.

On Anthology 2, on the second cd, there is the original John Lennon recording without embelishments; the most beautiful version there is.

i have heard snippets of their songs here and there from commercials.. or accidently.. and WAS NEVER impressed by their music.. and i think they are one of the most overrated artist... even today...

A good place to start is Beatles 1. It has 27 of their songs if I'm not mistaken. That's what got me into them. I LOVE Norwegian Wood and Come Together.

1's is definitely a good place to start, as are the Red and Blue albums. The official album to start with imo is Revolver. Taxman, Elenor Rigby, Tomorrow Never Knows, She Said She Said, Here, There, and Everywhere are just a few of the choice tracks on there. I have been listening to this one since I was a kid and it never gets old.

After that all their albums from Rubber Soul to Let It Be are equally great imo. Its amazing to me how many class A songs they wrote within such a short period of time. The 1st four albums are the ones that took me the longest to appreciate...but they are all still very good.

Someone above also said they like their solo stuff more than when they were together. The only one that applies to for me is George Harrison, esp on All Things Must Pass, which is as great as any of the Beatle albums.
